Hi, a friend of mine just bought a used White 1418 sewing machine. She has never done any sewing before at all, and wanted the machine so she could learn. She did not try it out before buying. The shank, needle clamp, and presser foot were not installed. I put the these parts back on the machine, and they are not in alignment - needle goes just to the left of the hole in the presser foot on the down stroke and strikes the top of the presser foot. Am trying to see if there is a way to troubleshoot this problem and determine the cause for the misalignment. Would hate for my friend to be out of $30 when she is so exicted about learning to sew. So if anyone has ideas, I would appreciate help! Debbie

I have a White 1418. Here's how you do it:
1. Attach the buttonhole presser foot (should have come with your machine) and place the fabric underneath.
2. Set the stitch length knob to 0, the zigzag width knob to 5, and set the needle position to center. Sew 3-5 stitches.
3.Change the stitch length to 0.5, the zigzag width to 2, and the needle position to left. Sew to the entire length of your buttonhole.
4.Set stitch length knob to 0, zigzag width knob to 5, and needle position to center and sew about 3-5 stitches
5. Set the stitch length knob to 0.5, zigzag width to 2, and set needle position to the right. Pressing the R button (reverse button), sew up to the top stitches.
6. Remove the fabric and open the button hole with a button hole cutter.
Sounds complicated, but it's really easy. I love this machine, you just have to know how to use it!

Without the model number I cannit be more specific.
If your model is not shown, tale a look at the others for one that is similar.....there really is not a lot of difference from one to another once you see the logic of the thread being
1. Directed from the spool to the ....
2. Tension Unit, then a
3. Length pulled by the take-up arm,
4. Held and then directed
5. Through the needle eye
Hope you have some joy with this.....it is probably all outlined in your Instruction Manual too

If you have taken the hook out that is the half moon shape first of all make sure the needle is at the top of the machine, hook in, gate up and that is all there is to it.
