Our church has two farberware coffee urns. The smaller one's light goes on as soon as it is plugged in and you can feel the base of the pot where it meet the foot warm up but it does not perk at all. The larger one will perk, but makes cool weak coffee. What can I do to repair these urns rather than purchase new ones. They are only 2 years old and used only once a week.

Dear Pastor Jim
It sounds like both pots heating elements went out or are going out and need replaced! You didnt give the model numbers so I cant tell you the parts numbers to order! but if you go to the faberware website with the model numbers I am sure they can help you!
This should be an easy fix if you are the handy man type!

Hi you have a pot made in China, 1 of 2 things are broken. 1 the thermostat, 2 the keepwarm element. 9 out of 10 times it is the thermo. You can not buy them in the USA. I have a auction on eBay and I cab make the parts out ob USA parts. Mt eBay name is ron622c, you can take a look. Go to Farberware coffee pot parts. Good luck. Ron
SOURCE: My 25cup Farberware urn quit perking coffee can it
I have the same urn and had the same problem.
There are 3 common causes of lost perk that can be dealt with at home, and cause about 1/2 of the failures with these urns. They are very common when the pots are used rarely or carelessly cleaned after use, and when coffee is ground too fine for perc (drip grind is too fine for perc). As long as the pot is still heating, check these three things:
1) Clean the _inside_ of the hollow stem )that holds the basket and moves the water from the bottom of the pot to the top), to remove all grounds. You should be able to see clearly through it.
2) At the bottom of this stem there is a very small cup that has little holes in it and fits into the little well at the bottom of the pot. Make sure these are completely clear.
3) Scour out the little well so all residue/ grounds are removed and the little cup fits perfectly into the well.
It is the perfect fit of the two that allows the perc-ing cycle to occur.
If the pot is not heating, or these cleaning measures do not work, a local electric repair shop can probably do the repair for about 1/2 the cost of a new urn.
Testimonial: "I will try the cleaning methed first. Thanks for the helpful hint. I don't use it very often,so I'll see."
SOURCE: We have several Farberware FSU255 coffee urns in
I have the older style 55 cup coffeemaker. It is critical that the coffee grounds basket compress that spring on the stem. Pull the spring upward alittle until the basket rises slightly above it's seated position until you put the lid on and it will put the necessary pressure on the stem down in the heater element hole. Also there is what appears to be a loose washer on the bottom of that stem (where it fits into the heater unit) This washer must be free to move around and it acts like a check valve to prevent water that has "perked" up the stem from falling back down the stem.
