Most generator have a small block that hold 2 brushes and an 8mm socket shiuld be all you need. They are usually found at the very endnof the stator

Slip ring or comutator segment type?
Rotating field?
A fine grit sandpaper may be placed between the brush and segments to sand the brushes down to proper contour and maximum contact of brushes and segments after sanding.
Same spring tension should be on all brushes. If plane phasing is adjustable, leave it as found.

Generator replacement brush notice:
1, from the model and material needs and the original brush.
2.It is best to grind the new brush to the Radian size of the old brush.
3. pay attention to adjust the brush grip pressure.
4. the carbon brush size should be equal, not too big or too small. The carbon brush is not subject to force in the process of placement.
5. pay attention to the carbon brush and armature to have obvious contact, do not push the carbon brush in.

Generator brush replacement method:
1, the first with a special wrench loose brush braid fastening screws, loose fastening screws should not be loosened excessive, to prevent screw loosening and falling off.

2, take off the carbon brush braid, the carbon brush and the pressure-equalizing spring at the same time. When installing a carbon brush, put the brush into the brush grip.
3, then press the equalizing spring.
4.Use special wrench to fasten the brush and braid to fasten the screw. When fastening the screw, it is not necessary to exert too much force to prevent the screw from being damaged.
5. Check that the brush moves freely in the brush grip, and the spring can be pressed in the center of the brush.

Ust 3500 watt generator runs fine but have very little electrical output what can i check?

I'm getting reference that it a Gentron GG3500 which has brushes and an AVR.

With producing some voltage indicates that rotor is still partially magnetized at least. Note some will cost nearly as much as replace to whole generator.

Common Problems and solutions
  • Demagnetized rotor. Re-initialize
  • Bad brushes. Replace
  • Glaze contact rings. Clean
  • Shorted or open rotor. Replace
  • Bad AVR. Replace
  • Bad field supplying the AVR voltage control voltage. Replace alternator stator.

Cummins generator starts but no power

Cummins generator set will occasionally encounter generator failure in the process of use that Cummins generator set is not generating electricity. What is the cause of it? And what to do about it? In fact, there are a lot of reasons that Cummins generator set is not generating electricity.
1. Wrong connection of generator set. Processing: check and correct by wiring diagram.
2. Generator speed is too low. Processing: measuring speed and keeping it at rated value.
3. The connection between the stator winding and the generator distribution equipment has sludge or oxide, the connection screw is loose, the connection wire is broken, and the stator winding is broken. Handling: use a multimeter or lamp test method to find out where the wire is broken. Check the connection and contact of each connection screw.
4. Excitation circuit broken or bad contact. Processing: use multimeter to identify broken wire and reweld the broken wire to bind insulation.
5. Rectifying tube (including rectifier diode, thyristor) is damaged. Treatment: replace damaged parts.
6. Brush contact with slip ring bad or brush pressure is not enough. Treatment: clean the surface of the slider ring, polish the brush, make it match with the surface of the slider ring, increase the brush pressure.
7. Brush grip rusts, brush can not slide up and down. Treatment: wipe the inner surface with a cloth brush, if damaged, should be replaced.
8. Cummins generator exciter brush position is incorrect, brush damage or spring pressure is not enough. Handling: adjust the brush to the correct position, replace the brush, adjust the spring pressure.

My eg2800 generator is putting out 150 volts, why

Loaded circuit or open circuit? If loaded, brushes need cleaning before buying parts. Check manual for procedure on your model. The brushes are usually culprit. Make sure cleaned and tension springs are free. Use compressed air to clean out armature area where brushes located. Re install and test. If better but not fixed replacement brushes may be needed. If open ckt voltage is high this could be normal. Suggest you email product support to be sure.

Coleman powermate generator won't generate

Check rotor again and measure to see if you have DC voltage on the brushes while running. If no then suspect capacitor

Generator starts but does not generate power

  1. Check for any blown fuse and replace. It can be traced directly from the output lines.
  2. Check field excitation. The field excitation is supplied by the battery to the excitation coil through a pair of carbon brushes. If the brushes are worn out, no excitation field is supplied and no output is generated. Replace carbon brush if found worn-out.
  3. Use an analog multitester to check the continuity of the carbon brush and the field coil.

Generator dose not produce power, just stop working.

Check the rectifier board installed under gen cover that powers the brushes. This board has a capacitor about 1 inch long and 3/4 inch dia. If the capacitor looks swollen or burned replace board or carefully remove cap and replace with similar. You can use a larger capacitor with same rating, just tie cap to rear cover. Also check the condition of the brushes. Parts are not too expensive. Check with jacksmallengines on the web for parts. enjoy

Briggs & Stratton Burnt Brushes

Are you running something that has a high startup current? A well pump, air conditioner, air compressor, etc.
All of these things draw more than the rated power from your generator for a little while, then settle down and draw the regular rated power they have on the dataplate. This higher level of power is called the surge rating of the generator ( think the EXL8000 is something like 8250 watts for 30 seconds, check your manual) - if you regularly go over the surge rating you'll burn brushes, mess up slip rings, and potentialy kill a voltage regulator once in a while.

When we calculate how large a generator to use for an emergency backup system we add up all of the currents required by all of the things that have to run, then we calculate the maximum surge power for all the loads that have this requirement. We try and get a generator that will supply the "regular" load at 80% of it's rated capacity and still be able to handle the expected surge load. Sometimes we have to use a larger generator than needed for the regular load to get the surge load to be OK.

So you might need to trade up to the 10Kw Briggs to handle your load.
