Dear Rob,
Really Thankful for the detailed description for the Speaker Repair.
It really helped me a lot. I have a unusual situation here with me. I have dissected the whole console and found the outer band of the speaker has just come off....have attached photos to make it clear. does the outer speaker cone will make a difference or i will have to replace the speakers itself.....when i checked pressing the speaker down and played the distortion had gone....but while playing without holding the distortion would come back....Hope you can help me in this situation....Thanks in Advance..... how can replace the speaker the bass sound is brok - 714812a0-935e-4f95-922e-50c6ba281b9c.jpg 36e62701-6370-491a-a317-a11c69cc9525.jpg

Hi , thanks for this topic, i would like to ask how do you remove the front grill? Thanks!

I read elsewhere that it is possible to pry off the grilles, and I tried but failed multiple times using different methods, so in the end I just PUSHED them out, from the inside using the blunt end of a rod carefully poking THROUGH the already broken foam surround which I was replacing. Functionally a success, but the convex surface of the grilles are not mint-condition anymore.

The carton (speaker cone) can come loose from the rubber band that should hold it firmly in place. They are supposed to be glued together. This is what I did. I removed the protecting grill in front. Check if the cone is still connected to the rubber band. If not, I remove the screws around the speaker. Open the casing itself. Do not forget the screw in the middle of the battery compartment. Remove the bottom cover. Disconnect the 2 wires on the speaker and take out the speaker. It will come out with the plastic protection around it. Looking at the cone now, push up the Carton cone and keep it in place by putting some tissue paper or small cloth underneath. Clean the cone first. Use some rubber cement on the outer edges of the cone and press the rubber back on the cone. Let it dry for an hour and then remove the tissue / cloth, so the cone goes back to its normal position. You can use some extra rubber (those pre-glued strips that you would use to fix a bicycle tire) to make it extra strong. Remount everything back in place and voila....it works again! If your cone is not damaged, the casing most probably does not seal good anymore. Tighten all screws a little more and use plastic electrical tape all around to seal all joints. The bass is produced inside the casing itself and pushed out via a horn. If it is not closed off well, your bass sounds grumpy.Good luck. Also check: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtuDJCqGb6I

Dear Nishant, you cannot order these "Atlas" drivers/speakers from Harman Kardon. See here their response: "Again, as stated many times, they are not for sale. We do not stock them separately. They cannot be purchased. Best Regards, Vu Le Technical Support Specialist III Harman International Lifestyle Division 8500 Balboa Boulevard Northridge, CA 91329" Basically, we are srewed. I tried to put in another driver from another brand, but the sound is horrible. Especially since it is almost impossible to install another driver as such that it fits tight. If it doe not close of all gaps, the soundbox will not produce any bass. In the end, I just stopeed finding solutions and bought myself another system. Harman Kardon sucks because they offer no service at all. Oh no, not fully right, they offerde me 205 discount on my next buy, but then you have to live in the USA !

I had my speakers 3/4 volume and they were fine. later they just started making a quiet crackling and the bass seems to not be in the sound, so it sounds tinny.

If you feel happy to do it I would take out a driver and try to look at the capacitors on the crossover for any leakage and if you have a multimeter handy check that the ohm's on the bass driver to see if they are within the stated range,a continuity test or a 9v battery across the bass terminals should tell if coil is broken, also is this just on the one speaker or both?

Why is my speaker no playing, some sound but no bass?

Assuming that it is a large speaker with a large magnet on the back, and it has a large cone that was designed to play 'bass', if it has been dropped (or, for example was transported in a vehicle that went over a big bump - particularly with the speaker sitting perpendicular to the floor of the car/truck), the pole piece (magnet) in the very center shifts and pinches the coil between the outer magnet and the pole piece. This stops the coil from moving in and out through the magnetic field. Because high frequencies do not require much motion of the coil within the magnetic field, if the coil itself did not get broken in the process, higher frequencies (treble) will be reproduced (however poorly), but you'll get zero low frequencies (bass). This COULD be fixable, but a speaker repair specialist with a suitable demagnetizer would be needed to reposition the pole piece, and then, the whole cone would probably need to be replaced, as well. Depending upon whether it is an expensive (JBL/EV?) or a cheap speaker, it may be cheaper just to replace it.

If the speakers vibrate especially when the mega bass is on, does that mean that the speakers are blown on my icf-cdk50?

Real low bass is mostly vibration. Anything that has a "mega bass" 'enancement' is cutting corners to make up for bass-reproduction shortcomings. Speakers measuring 2-5/8' have no business reproducing real bass. Blown speakers would be silent. Torn cones from excessive volume might sound like unwanted vibration. Your vibration might be a resonance of the unit's own housing, mounting hardware or something nearby. Try moving it to another location.

These units are not economically repairable. If you like it and you think it's broken you might snag a whole new on on eBay with wise bidding.

I have logitech speakers for my computer. I need a new cable that goes from the bottom of the bass speaker to the two smaller speakers. A couple of the pins are broken on the plug that plugs into the bass...

logitech rarely has replacement parts. and for this model is not for the u.s. distribution so youcan not even call u.s tech support for help. try ebay or craiglist. if the connector is not proprietary you might be able to get a electronic repair shop to repin the connector.

Speaker has no bass

Make sure there are no wires that could be crossed (i.e. positive and negative).  Also check the speaker for any tears below the cone in above the magnet.  Hope this helps.  Good luck.

Speaker muffled and distorted

Don't know about the type of your hardware, but your description is very light. In order to further isolate the problem, I would do the following:

1. Replace the speaker with a working one. If this works fine, then it is really the speaker that is broken. If however the intact speaker shows the same problem when connected to the same channel, then the amplifier/equalizer has an issue.

If it is by this confirmed that the speaker is broken look at step 2:

2. Inside the speaker there is usually a frequency separation filter. Either the bass loudspeaker is damaged or the filter. Ideally you could exchange filter and loudspeaker with parts from a working speaker box and find out by this which component is defective.

3. Once you have identified the defective component, try to find out the brand and type and perform an internet search.

4. If you don't find anything, bring the whole thing to a repair service, they can order the spare part.

If you are too lazy or technically not very skilled, go directly to step 4.

Hope that helps

You need to take apart tthe sub woofer and check the connection to bass speaker for continuity. It sounds like an internal broken connection to speaker on sub woofer unit.
