Basically:
Charge or put in batteries.
Turn both radios on.
Turn the volume up.
Tune both radios to the same channel. Pick a channel that is quiet. Quiet means very little chatter and very little white noise. You can make a channel more quiet by increasing squelch but increasing squelch decreases range.
Both radios are now listening.
When you want to talk, press the talk button and say what you want to say.
Remember you are just talking to anyone listening on that channel, so be nice.
you could have ten people talking to each other and if no one wants to talk to you then you will be talking to no one.Now if its a radio problem then I would say turn up the variable for your modulation , make sure your RF GAIN is wide open and turn your SQUELCH all the way to the left then go to different channels and ask for a radio check or have a friend drive far enough away and with his radio give you a radio check.
check you center channel. Is the speaker hooked up correctly? Is the center channel turned off in the setup menu? Most voices in movies will come through the center channel
It seems a small hardware-problem, like a button is sticking, making a continues connection. If you are comfortable in hardware-modifications, try to open the casing of the malfunctioning walkie talkie. Do this carefully, not to damage it further. When opened, check the 3 buttons to see any damage, or undesired connections (caused by extensive use or plain dirt).
Normally in a Motorola T5700, to set a specific channel to monitor (and reply to) called your working channel, you press the Menu (center) button and the current channel shown in the display will flash. Press either the + or - buttons to change to your desired channel number which should be identical to both radios. Press the PTT button to save.
Likewise, both radios must have identical Interference Eliminator Code. To set code, press Menu till the code display blinks. Press + or - to select code. Press the PTT to save. To disable the code, select 0.
Hope that this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
