Sputtered out and now it won't stay running; dies when put in gear.

It was sluggish going up hill but was driving fine, then it started cutting out and coughing like it was running out of gas. Pulled over: gas, oil, water all fine. Started back up and drove a couple miles then sputtered and died, tried to restart but wouldn't keep going even long enough to put in gear. Pushed off the road and tried again later, started but dies when put in gear. Suspect the catalytic but is there anything else that can do this? (V6 automatic)

Mass air flow , crank sensor . I wouldn't discount anything . Having a scan tool that can view engine sensor data would be a great help too , testing fuel pressure and flow and back pressure test the exhaust .

You check the coils with a ohm meter. They should 6-8 thousand ohms at the spark plug connections. One lead to one spark plug connection and the other lead to the other . It's not likely a coil for stalling. If coil , Your car can still run on four cylinders. It can be a ignition module. It fails when it gets extremely hot. The module is located under the coils.

SOURCE: Car died and wont start

The fuel injector motor or called the Idle Air control module is not the failure. The fuel pump is overheating and dies out. Thus when letting sit a while the engine is starting up again.
I woult take vehicle to local shop and have them replace the fuel pump , I suggest not getting taken for a complete tune up. Just the fuel pump is the most cost effective way .

SOURCE: car dies when it heats up and won't crank back up until cooled

normally a speed control sensor can solve this problem, but also check the crank senson.

SOURCE: 1992 Roadmaster Estate 5.7 liter dies for no reason.

Hey I have a 1993 Buick roadmaster also. Had exact same problem. It turned out to be the fuel pump. It was going bad and would work fine then cut off and then back on. Took me 6 months to figure it out. Every time I took it to the mechanic it would work just fine so I put a full tank of gas in it and told him to drive it and it died after a few days. Was a real headach. Hope this helps.

No gas getting to filter,,, car has been running fine

Change the fuel pump or make sure the fuel safety cut off switch didn't trip or look for a blown fuse. The fuel cut off is usually found in the trunk.

have had a few of these in with carb faults but were 2 barrel type.basic checks first,is pcv valve hose under carb not split(runs to valve cover or oil cap on this model?).try driving without airfilter element for test, have had one in that looked clean but had a fine mist of oil on it that blocked and caused air starve and stall on power.Did both problems start at same time? or maybe you are chasing 2 probs.being a ute.I have had probs with rusting petrol tanks and blocked fuel filters

Your transmission torque converter lock up clutch is not unlocking, that kills the engine and is the cause of the OD light flashing.
