I bought a used 2650 off eBay for £70, and when I hook it up to power the green power LED blinks, indicating it's in standby. When I press the power button all the fans come on but no drives spin up, there's no power to the cd drive but the power LED still keeps blinking which implies it's still in the standby state. I'm assuming the server is in some sort of 'ready' state for IPMI poweron but I can't think of any way to get it on. Does anyone know how to force it to power on?
Process of elimination? I first thought it may be a power problem but I could not understand the LED flashing (It still maybe a power problem) If you can leave on charge for 4-5 hours more if you can make sure the light is not flashing (That is turn the laptop off at the power switch) Try turning on after being on charge for as long as you can If that does not work it may be the bios with the wrong setting or the Hard Drive is faulty (The more I think about it I think it may the the last issue) Try the other steps first the turn on holding the DELETE button it (I think that is the button to access the bios ) This with work if the Hard is Good or bad)

You should be able to get into the bios of a Computer, Laptop or Server if the Hard drive is faulty this suggest to me the problem in the area of the bios or before I have used many Servers and only fixed a few not a Dell If you you really want to fix it yourself you can buy PC Analyzer which may Diagnose the problem These are a PCI Card that give out numbers and codes of what is working on your motherboard I purchase mine for under £10 The one I have checks Both voltages 5 & 12 & + & - OSC, CLK, RUN, BIOS, & RST and as well as Analyzing other parts not sure if this will help but it is the last resort I use when I cannot fix a Computer, Laptop or Server

Basically my 2650 seems to be stuck in standby mode and when I press the power button the fans all come on but nothing else does.
Thanks for you reply coolcat but I don't think I was clear enough in my question. This is actually a Dell Poweredge server, not a laptop. On the front panel of the server is a small power button with a green status led in the middle of it. When I plug the power into the server (without turning the server on) the power status led blinks green which according to the server documentation means the server is in a standby state. When I press the power button the fans all come on (all 6 of them) but nothing else does meaning I can't even get into the BIOS or run a linux live cd etc. I thought it may be that the RAID battery had drained so I left it plugged in for a while but it didn't resolve the issue.
Thanks for the link. If you look at Table 1-4 the power LED is simply blinking, no interval changes, no system beeps, etc. I did a bit more testing and I hooked it up to my network. I got some activity on the management NIC but not on the 2 embedded NICs. When I pressed the power button I saw the LEDs on the HDDs blip on for a second. Again this supports the theory that the system is still in a standby state. The only thing I can try is pressing the NMI button. Failing that I'm sure whacking it with a hammer will do something!!!
