not difficult..with right tools and patience..the touchpad is part of the upper assembly, and requires that the bottom be removed. When I do this, it takes around an hour.

SOURCE: zd8000 keyboard is skipping letters and spaces
Hey I have an HP zd8000 also and I've experienced everything that you guys mentioned. What's a laptop without a battery if you can't take it anywhere? After two years, I got so frustrated. I researched HP's web site and came across a battery recall. I just got mines in the mail today (Dec. 1, 2008), and my notebook is portable again! :D They will ask for your battery serial number. While typing the serial number be sure not to mix up the letter 'B' with the number '8', or else it will show as invalid serial. This is the link for the HP Battery Replacement Program!

I hope this solves your problem!

Press the Receiver button (and the lights will start
flashing.
Then if the Keyboard isn't working, press the small RESET/CONNECT
button on the back of the board to connect the keyboard to the
receiver.
If the MOUSE isn’t working, push the small RESET/CONNECT button
on the back of the mouse to connect to the receiver. Then they
should work okay.
Hope this helps. Bud

I think it isn't that the keyboard is stiff, it's that it's just too slow now. If I type slower (painfully slowly) then all the letters do come out but I can't believe that the mousepad sensitivity should also affect the keyboard - can that really be the case?
