Drill battery charger doesn't work

I have a new Hitachi portable drill that employs a lithium ion battery. The drill works fine, but the charger, that I have only used once with no trouble, no longer works. The red light went on went I plugged it in, and it stayed on, as it should of, when I put in the battery, but then soon mysteriously went off. There doesn't seem to be any power getting to the charger. I, of course, checked the outlet, in order to see if that were where the problem lay, but the outlet works fine with other electronic items. I also tried plugging the charger into a different outlet, but that too had no positive effect. Any advice that you might offer me regarding what might be wrong here, and how I might fix it, would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem, with my 18vdrill modle number DV 18DL. The light comes on the charger, you put your battery in and the charger stops working. I have taken the charger apart.the fuse is fine, there are no scorch marks on the board, the transformer or any thing else.Seems to be a common fault. can anyone(some from hitachi would be nice) help.

Harvey's answer is right on the money if your battery has discharged too far. If you don't know AC from DC electricity and understand what he means about polarity, find a friend who does or risk shocking yourself or blowing up the battery.

Hi Firemedic13; Most chargers like yours have a fuse inside them. Remove the screws that hold the charger together. The fuse will be on the low voltage side of the transformer. Un-solder and replace it with one of the same value. If the charger is not held together with screws (doubtfull) you will have to carefully cut along the seam where they were glued together. A dremmel tool works good for this. After repairing use some ABS pipe glue to re-seal them together. If the fuse is not blown then the unit will require testing by someone that is proficient with a multimeter. Most times it is the transformer that has fried a wire. If the sides of the transformer have any burnt spots on it then it will be the culprit. Hope this has helped. Best regards; HELP2DIY Please dont forget to rate my answer.

If you store the battery for extended periods (i.e. months), it spontaneously self-discharges. If the voltage of the overall pack drops too much, its electronics places the pack in "safe" mode and will not allow a charge. Try opening the battery pack and use a voltmeter to verify polarity. Then use a car battery charger (or another 12-18V battery) to charge the battery for 5-10 mins, bypassing the electronic charge regulation circuit. This should raise the battery pack voltage above the "safe" threshhold. Do NOT OVERCHARGE--limit this bypass charge to a few minutes. Then reassemble the battery pack and use the regular ("regulated") charger.

Awesome advice, this worked great! 5 minutes was more than enough on an 18V charger. Thank you Harvey!

I know Hitachi has for dealers a special service if there are some machines have long been in the warehouse and there happens to someone so one machine can be that the battery is no longer accepted in the charger, but the cells are certainly not degenerate because they get to Hitachi special boost with a Cadex charger to the deep discharge protection voltage returns to work up through a special circuit, often they are not li ion cell problems but quickly decline of some species li ion batteries, the 10.8-volt consumed quickly has little cell capacity and that is why I know , the service is free of charge at Hitachi for dealers.Take utmost Li-ion batteries in the charger, including batteries with more capacity swap them round and round off as the cells remain active, the greater Li ion batteries have a special circuit which is designed with a lot of information charging cycles the cells and much more even purchase date and the corresponding machine number codes contained in it, even when the loose batteries purchased betreffend.Li-ion is significantly better at capacity, but the strength and warmth and the tool motor that often suffers holding it usually shorter than the BatterySometimes people think that the battery has no power, but it turns out that the engine of both Panasonic and Milwaukee in 80% of cases the complaint. The engines have significantly less power and make a screeching noise and consume quickly caarbon brushes and if replace a armature its most not expensive but then better do that then buy new batteries.

18 v lithium-ion battery will not charge

The batteries were discharged too low. A lithium battery should be recharged as soon as you see a loss of power.

What Ryobi batteries p103 or p104 will a battery charger that came with my p100 batteries charge? Or will the charger work with these batteries?

If you have a P100 NiCad battery, the charger for that will not charge the new Lithium Ion P103 or P104 batteries. You need a specialised Ryobi Lithium Ion battery charger like this one

Two brand new Hitachi BSL1815X Lithium Batteries won't recharge (UC18YGSL charger and DS 18DSAL drill)

These batteries have big problems that Hitachi doesn't address very well. Unlike NiCad batteries, Lith-Ion ones must be periodically used and recharged to retain their battery functions, i.e. if they have been sitting on the shelf at a store for an extended period of time, chances are they will be dead when bought and will not accept a charge. If they go dead i.e. no little red light on the charger when you plug the battery unit in...it's basically junk.

If you can return them or exercise the warranty do so. If / when you get new ones DO NOT completely discharge them like you would NiCads. Lith-Ion batteries do not have the "battery memory" issues that NiCads have which means you don't lose running time if you don't fully discharge the battery unit prior to recharge. Completely discharging before recharge will ultimately kill them. Use the 1815X till almost dead and then charge it. It is also recommended Lith-Ion batteries not be stored fully charged i.e. charge the 1815X fully, drive a couple bolts or screws, remove the battery unit and then put it away. Do not leave battery unit plugged into the tool when you put the tool away. This will discharge and kill the battery unit.

There are non-Hitachi substitute batteries now on the market. I'm guessing the same precautions apply but I don't own one of the replacements so I don't truly know.

The actual batteries in the Hitachi BSL 1815X are Sanyo UR18650SAX lithium ion batteries. Lithium Ion cells aren't all that easy to get commercially because of handling & safety requirements. Not certain if you can take apart the 1815X and swap out the bad Sanyo cells.

no, I would not try this. You can charge a nicd battery on a lithium-ion charger but not the other way around.
