It could be that your machine has been set to "no answer" in the number of rings setup area. See page 46 on how to change the number of rings.

It could also be set for a "distinctive ring pattern". See page 51 on how to change that setting.

My fax machine will send faxes but not receive them. I have made sure it is plugged in and connected but no faxes will come through. Please Help!

If you have an answering machine, have it answer at three rings. Have the fax answer at five rings. Let the answer machine go thru it's cycle, and see if the fax picks up.

HP640 not receiving with Distinctive Ring Option

You need a dedicated ANALOG phone line.

A DSL filter screens out ANALOG signals to a DSL device.not the other way around. There are no DIGITAL fax machines.

I have the HP640 Fax machine and I'm trying to program the distinctive ring mode but when I follow the instruction which state to press the menu button and scroll to advanced fax and press ok and then it...

I had been confused for the past ten months on this issue and just figured it out! Get a distinctive ring from you telephone service. If you have a answering machine, set it to answer on the 4th ring. On the fax, press menue til you get to the BASIC FAX, press OK, scroll the arrow button til you get to the DISTINCTIVE RING, press OK. Call your special fax number assigned from the telephone co, the machine should read DRPD OK, then on the face of the hp640 on the left i believe is a button called Rcv. Mode/Contrast, press that til you get to DRPD Mode, press OK. It should work great!! Hope this helps.
