The waste absorber is full ,Replace the pads
then if you still get the error,you can reset it by following the directions below.
(reset without replacing pads can cause damage)
1) Enter SERVICE MODE By pressing Menu-Scan-Copy-Scan
2) Enter NVRAM by pressing <--- or ---> then OK
3)SET ABS-M LEVEL TO 0
4)OK

Your described problem with a Canon Pixma MP450 indicates that the absorbent material that takes in the waste ink could no longer absorb further anymore waste ink. The waste ink if a result of cartridge/head initiation and most often when cleaning is done.
Corrective action is of course replacement of the waste ink pad. Although the reset procedure could be performed to 'trick' the printer to think that it was replaced. Steps involve are:

3 use > to go to NVRAM ACCESS
4 set ABS-M LEVEL TO 0
5 Set ABS P LEVEL TO 0
6 Set press STOP to EXIT

try this
Discharge of the code 5100
1. Turn off printer.
2. retaining button Stop/Reset (red triangle in the circle) press button POWER - indicator it will light up with green color.
3. let go button Stop/Reset, continuing to hold POWER.
4. press button Stop/Reset 2 times, while holding POWER button, after which you will let go all buttons.
5. when indicator is lit BY Solid GREEN - press Stop/Reset 4 times! (this is the key)
6.turn off printer by POWER button, then turn on.
7. You should be set. If it didn't work, try it again, slowly. It WILL work!

Waste ink absorber is full
the waste ink tank needs to be cleaned or replaced and then the printer needs the counter reset.

The scanner lock switch may be in the locked position. Lift the cover and check the slide switch located on the top front left. If this is not the problem, you will have to have a service center look at the problem.
