I Need Console for 1988 Airdyne

I am looking for a replacement console for my Airdyne. The batteries were corrosive and broke the connectors in the part that snaps out, so I think I need to find a new console.

The age of the machine is not as big of a replacement parts hinder as is Schwinn going through so many buy outs since 1988.

One of the best exercise repair parts on online is FitnessRepairParts.com. They have consoles which are similar to your generation of machine for 170.00 - 240.00

Otherwise schwinn was most recently owned by Nautilus/Bowflex/LAMAR fitness and they may be able to help through their website.

Sorry, I don't have a great source of imformation to help with. I repair Schwinn exercise and it has become very hard to find parts recently as the new generation of AEROdynes are very different. Although, up until maybe 1-2 years ago, nothing had changed for 30 years.

Alternatively, search craigslist and ebay. You may have to buy an entire unit to get the part you desire. Often they have a drive mechanism worn out which devalues them to the seller, but has minimal to do with your search.

Good Luck.

What is the wheel circumference of older 1988 AirDyne to use for bike computer to replace Schwinn ergometer?

The wheel circumference of a 1988 Schwinn AirDyne exercise bike may vary depending on the specific model and tire size. To determine the wheel circumference for your bike computer, you'll need to measure it directly. Here's how you can do it:
  1. Measure the Tire Diameter: Lift the front wheel of the bike off the ground so it's freely spinning. Use a tape measure to measure the diameter of the tire from one side to the other. Make sure you measure the actual tire, not the rim.
  2. Calculate the Circumference: Once you have the diameter in millimeters, you can calculate the circumference using the formula: Circumference (mm) = ? (pi) x Diameter (mm).
    • You can approximate ? as 3.14 for simplicity.
  3. Convert to Centimeters or Meters: To make it more compatible with most bike computers, you might want to convert the circumference from millimeters to centimeters or meters.

What kind of batteries does the schwinn Airdyne take its about 22 yrs old?

Most computer console batteries for Airdynes are AA, you'll have to open up the console/meter housing in the back to replace them. I will be attaching a link to a diagram of the housing. Hope this helps, sincerely SportSmith..

The console doesn't display the time, calorie, distance and speed mode.

adjust the REED switch, see the diagram attached, clean it, and test for open or faulty, tight the connector very well.
2) tight the ribbon cable inside, and clean it.

4) measure the input voltage to the board display.
5) if your system has batteries replace by new ones with the same type alkalines (clean the contacts batteries very well from oxide, corrosion)

Load indicator and odometer and spedometer just quit working. Bike is ancient-circa 1988-but otherwise works well.

Same here. Can't find the part online. Local Schwinn dealer said they haven't made that part in at least 10 years. I put on a regular bicycle Cateye odometer. At least I have a measure, although it does feel like it agrees with the Schwinn odometer, even when I set the wheel size to just 100 cm I think it is still ~20% high.

I recently purchased an older schwinn airdyne and the console is missing the battery screw cap cover. I called around and it is no longer an available part. Anyone know how I might fix it without the cap...

I would take the cover of and expose the wire connection make sure you polarity is correct if you are good soldierer solder in long wires thru the bottom plate of console then solder a battey holder maybe a "AA" battery attach that with Velcro reassemble console ansee if it fire up
