My WD 1TB my passport external hdd doesnt show up in my devices but the light is on and it makes a weird whirring sound, can this be fixed

I am using a macbook pro. My external hard drive (WD My Passport USB 3.0 1TB Black) wont allow me to open the hard drive any longer (It was working fine, and then i disconnected it and re-connected it later on in the day to find that it no longer opened). The LED indicator light on the HDD is still functioning, but it now makes a weird whirring sort of noise for about 3 mins before rendering silent. Is this fix-able?

I tried plugging it into a friends windows operated computer and was able to see that it plugged in but was not able to go any further than that (could not open the drive or see any files). I tried to do a few scans on it, one came up S.M.A.R.T status unavailable and Health status warning.

Maybe it might be that the hard drive is dead , you can test if it works by connecting it to another computer or device (ps3) if it works (reads/writes) you might want to try this http://www.aeonity.com/trialerror .You can burn a live cd (Operating system on cd) and this might detect your drive if its a usb driver problem (used to  detect USB devices).

Recommend me branded USB drives ?

Honestly, any USB brand will cut it for you. What you want to ensure is that you are purchasing the proper version (1.0, 2.0, or 3.0) for whatever device the key will be associated with. Also make sure you don't buy too little or too much memory. But if you know all this and you just want a reliable brand, I would go with SanDisk.

How to fix My Passport Hard Disk 1 TB which is not working and showing error 0x8007041D I have my essential data in this device. How can I retrive the data from this device.

Hi there,
The mentioned error may be related to your anti virus software. Check the device on another PC to confirm where the issue comes from. If you have this option, disable or uninstall your current anti virus software and reinstall My Passport's drivers from Device Manager. Anyways, this error is OS related and your HDD should be fine.

Your WD HDD have been attacted by viruses for your computer or outside computer where you used it last. Make sure that you have an up to date antivirus software, scan your computer or the external hard drive, explore your computer, go to tools - folder options under view files & folders select show hidden files and folders apply and ok it.

WD external HDD my passport 500 Gb . It's not correctly installed into my PC - PC can't find driver. System Windows XP

Maybe it's a power issue. Try a shorter usb cord or try a different usb port. If you are using an usb hub, try to connect the hard disk straight to the pc.
