I am using a macbook pro. My external hard drive (WD My Passport USB 3.0 1TB Black) wont allow me to open the hard drive any longer (It was working fine, and then i disconnected it and re-connected it later on in the day to find that it no longer opened). The LED indicator light on the HDD is still functioning, but it now makes a weird whirring sort of noise for about 3 mins before rendering silent. Is this fix-able?
You can download a program from WD called Data lifeguard Diagnostic for windows there is a floppy and a windows program. I made a bootable floppy and started my computer with the floppy and typed windlg.exe and followed the instructions...http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1329/~/how-to-create-a-data-lifeguard-diagnostics-bootable-cd

Plug the drive into your PC.
Right Click on My Computer (or Computer in Vista/Windows 7) and select Manage.
Click on Disk Management.
Right Click the Volume in question and select Format. Select FAT32 in the options.

Maybe it might be that the hard drive is dead , you can test if it works by connecting it to another computer or device (ps3) if it works (reads/writes) you might want to try this http://www.aeonity.com/trialerror .You can burn a live cd (Operating system on cd) and this might detect your drive if its a usb driver problem (used to detect USB devices).

I tried plugging it into a friends windows operated computer and was able to see that it plugged in but was not able to go any further than that (could not open the drive or see any files). I tried to do a few scans on it, one came up S.M.A.R.T status unavailable and Health status warning.
also, thank you for taking the time to try and help me
