The plastic spines on the hub plate that connects the tub to the transmission is stripped and slipping.
Order a new plastic hub plate
.
Remove the center cap of the wash plate agitator located on the bottom of the tub.
Remove the 11 mm (7/16" bolt) with an impact tool (a must).
This will save you a day's worth of pain and grief and worth the $70.00.
Spray sometimes rusty metal spline with penetrating oil.
screw bolt back on and leave about one full turn loose.
Replace cap and run a load of wash.
This will break away the rusty spline connection that holds the agitator wash plate on to the transmission.
Most any other way tugging on the plastic agitator wash plate will break it (new one for $170).
repeat steps above removing the center cap and bolt.
Now the round agitator wash plate should wiggle off easy.
your will see the plastic hub after removal of the agitator wash plate.
Pull out the plastic clamp and unscrew the 6 screws.
clean the transmission spline shaft with a metal brush spraying it with penetrating oil.
clean and replace the hub plate with new hub plate.
rebuild the washer with the same steps as you used to diss-assemble it.
You fought the washing machine and you won!
Pat yourself on the back!

Hello gwatson01,
Wondering if you could rate my clarification request as a solution? I joined this forum as a owner DIY’er to help other owners. The machine is just too expensive to junk and as you found fairly easy to work on. As a forum member as you I receive no compensation for my support to other owners. Thank you in advance for your support. Rich
My solution;
I’m an owner/DIY’er of the machine. Please take a look at this post and see if your mechanical noise may be coming from underneath the tumblers, maybe some coins grinding around under the tumblers. If you think it is take a look at the service manual link in that post. It will take you thru the tumbler removal process, see if you feel comfortable with the process, the manual does not call out a #20 Torx driver is required to remove the tumbler.
If you think the grinding noise is very metallic and not muffled by a tub of water the grinding noise may be coming from the transmission/clutch area and removing the machine front vertical cover will be necessary to better sound isolate the suspect area of the machine. Do you feel OK to remove the front panel? If so see this post.
The 1st link I sent you to shows that this owner had issues after the coin removal. I would also like you try a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket. Can you let me know if that cycle runs with no noise? We can’t totally rule out an issue with the clutch/transmission components with the info supplied so far. To help you remotely diagnose this issue detail information is needed. Let’s try to sound isolate the grinding noise source location. Follow all safety rules in the Service Manual. If you don’t feel comfortable to proceed I would recommend you call in a qualified FAV6800AWW repair service for support.
SOURCE: maytag washer won't fill or agitate; only spins on cycle
sounds like you have a blown fuse. I dont have a schematic so I dont kno where you have to look to find it
SOURCE: Maytag top loading washer will not agitate
My rule of thumb: Take what you paid for the washer new and divide by number of years without repairs. That is your cost per year for the washer. If the repair will get you another year and is less than the number above do the repair. If you have done more than 2 major repairs in a year it is time to think new. eric
SOURCE: Maytag Bravos top load gives LF code not working. Any idea?
Have same problem. Service tech said LF code is caused by low water pressure coming into machine. Tech verified water flow looked fine, getting new controller installed tomorrow.
