Get HD tuner or new TV?

I have a SONY KP-61HS30 rear projection HD ready TV. The manufacture date is 9/01. If I get an HD tuner and digital cable box, will the picture be fairly similar to the newer TVs or is it best to invest in a new TV at this point?

The most you will probably get out of this TV is probably 720P HD. Most new flat screen TV's have 1080P If you want to upgrade make sure you get 1080P because some flat screens nowadays are made with only 720P still. If you upgrade don't throw away the TV. Sell it, give it away, or take it to your local 2nd hand store or salvation army to help the community and the people who might need a TV. I hope you make the right decision.

By the way. If you upgrade and you have say Comcast, Dish, etc. You still need to get an HD box from them. No way around that if you want HD. Make sure the box they give you has HDMI capability or you won't be getting the full potential of the TV.

When one or all the colors are bending severly, then the convergence circuit is not functioning correctly and must be repaired. Only one color bending means just the convergence ICs and all colors bending means convergence ICs and voltage supplies. Convergence issues are the most common problem with rear projection (w/picture tubes) televisions. The cure is replacing the convergence IC's. Sometimes the pico fuses need replaced as well. If you have the experience to use a soldering iron and a basic understanding of electronics, then, you may be able to do this job. If not then call a servicer in your area. Go to the Sony website, Sony.com, and you can locate one in your area.

Sounds like a convergence problem. Common in this set.

SOURCE: will not power on, red light flashing six times

the problem is in the power supply most likely. The overvoltage protect circuit is causing you not to be able to turn the tv on. This is common to all tv's. Solution unfortuantely is get another tv unless you know someone who can either work on or replace the internal power supply

Is the sony KP-61hs30 a HD television?

Hi, Although it is a rear projection TV it will work with HD content.
You will still need a set top box to decode HD programs. This is an old TV with tubes inside and a CRT screen. They will fail and it's getting harder to get parts for. My advice go get a flat pannel TV.
Good luck

Our Sony KP-53HS30 53" HD-Ready Rear Projection TV

According to the tech manual I looked at, it's a bad board - it just doesn't say which board. Sorry. Looks like it's making a trip to the shop.

Good luck.

How do I get the HD on this model? Which cables/hook up should I use? I do not have a cable box or set top box but if these are required, please let me know. Thanks!

Your unit is HDTV ready but is not an HDTV. It is capable of displaying HDTV only through the component inputs. Your tuner is analog NTSC and will not receive HDTV or digital.

You could get an HDTV picture using a Blue Ray DVD and hooking up the component connectors from the DVD to the TV.

The only other way would be to get an HDTV tuner with a component output and hook it up the same way, component out to component in, and hook the tuner input to an off air antenna (receiving HDTV) or cable or satellite with HD signals.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

The Direct TV installer is on the way. What do I need to do to get this TV to receive HD? It says that it is HD Ready. Not sure what that means.

You dont have to do anything When your TV says it's HD ready it just simply means that it is waiting for your installer to run the HD signal to it through a cable. Then your TV is going to turn that signal into HD picture and audio. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy HD programing

Hi! just need to know if my tv is ready for digital tv i have the sony kp-57ws520. i've hooked up my antenna and i still dont get a picture thanks for any info.

Your Sony KP-57WS520 television has an analog tuner, so you may need a digital tuner or a converter box to continue to receive over-the-air programming.
If you subscribe to a cable or satellite service, your television viewing should not be affected by the June 12, 2009, cut-off date for full-power analog broadcasting. Please contact your service provider for complete information.

Sony projection tv with dual tuners; only one tuner appears to be working now.

To verify that the tuner is the problem, move the cable from the second to the first. If you don't get a signal, the tuner is bad. The main tuner is part number 859843000 and is available for $47.38 from tritronicsinc.com

KP-61HS30 Sony TV turn pink and green text is bowed

Hi,

Check out CONVERGENCE GALLERY . If you see your symptoms you have a problem in your convergence amplifier circuits. Typical Sony Convergence repair requires disassembly for replacement of 2 ICs, sometimes a fuse or 2, then TV is like new.

It is much more complicated than changing batteries on your remote. Many consumers try unsuccessfully to do a convergence repair. I recommend finding someone competent to do it for a reasonable price. Typical repair shop charges may be from $400 to $650.

If you are in the Calgary area, call me. More reasonable rates.
