Roper gas range - flame in oven not even

The gas oven is a roper, model number unknown, it came with my condo, and is about 6 years old. The range top works just fine but the oven is not heating evenly. It lights and will cycle on and off to maintain temperature but it is in no way working properly. This oven can burn one half of the food while the other half stays nice and cold. After making sure the oven was level I looked at the flame in the lower part of the oven/broiler area. The flame is a horse shoe shape. It appears yellow and smaller on one side and blue and drastically larger on the other. Any advice on what the problem might be would be a great help. Is this something that is just a simple clean it out job and if so how do I do this because google is not helping me find an answer.

SOURCE: oven heat

The problem with you oven is the FFD (flame faliure device ) also known as FSD (flame safety device) The way is works is that when an oven is ignited first time the heat from the low level flame heats phail at the end of the calliary tube which in turn increases the pressure within this tube forcing open the FSD valve to open allowing full gas through. when this fails it restricts the amount of gas flowing through it leaving the oven with a small flame. these are easily repalaced but the law says it must be done by a corgi registered engineer for gas safetey reasons...But 110 % that is your fault. SOURCE: Oven won't heat up to set temperature

IF THIS IS A GAS RANGE, AND IS USED ALOT, 4YEARS IS ABOUT THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF THE IGNITOR FOR THE OVEN. IF THE IGNITOR IS WEAK, IT MAY NOT OPEN THE SAFETY VALVE. WITH A FLAT IGNITOR, IT REQUIRES 3.3AMPS TO OPEN THE VALVE. IF IT IS A ROUND IGNITOR, IT REQUIRES 2.8 AMPS TO OPEN THE OVEN IGNITOR.

IF THIS IS AN ELECTRIC OVEN WITH AN ELECTRONIC CONTROL, I WOULD SUSPECT THE OVEN SENSOR AS THE DEFECTIVE PART. AT ROOM TEMP, IT SHOULD READ ABOUT 1084 OHMS OF RESISTANCE.
IF IT IS A MECHANICAL CONTROL(WITH A KNOB) IT MAY BE ADJUSTABLE BY REMOVING THE KNOB AND INSERTING A THIN SCREWDRIVER UP THE SHAFT OF THE CONTROL AND TURNING A SCREW IN THE SHAFT TO CALIBRATE THE TEMP.

10 year old DCS Oven does ignite. Oven ignitor glows but maybe not enough to trigger LP from being introduced?

just because the ignitor glows it doesn't mean it's good,it takes 3.2 amps for the ignitor to open the gas valve and ignite the flame, usually if the flame doesn't ignite in around 40 seconds the ignitor is bad.also check the burner tube, your model number doesn't come up so i don't know if you have one or two ignitors in this oven but i've found that when the ignitor starts to fail and the customer waits to long to have it looked at the ignitor burns a hole in the tube and then both the ignitor and tube has to be changed, hope this helps and good luck with your oven.

Hi Nancy
I have to ask you a couple of questions. Is the range set up for LP or Natural gas? Blow-tourch sounds are normally caused by to much air going into the burner. If you can look at the burner safely the flames should burn just out of the burner. If the flames are way off the burner the air adjustment is way off or you range is set for the wrong gas. Are your top burners OK?

The electric spark lights the gas at the spark area but the rest of the oven flame never materializes and the spark continues to click even though the initial flame is there

Make sure the thermocouple from the gas valve is in the pilot flame. If it is and you have no ignition, replace the gas valve. The clicking stops once the oven ignites.

Flames in oven are WAY too high! Having trouble lowering them.

Hi! melisrus
If you are using LP, even if you change the regulator settings from Natural Gas to LP Gas, the orifices all need to be changed. The Orifices should have come with the new unit, if not contact Hotpoint.

Make sure you order the instruruction manual and this is an Oven with Range Top, you will need orifices for all the burners on the range top.

Lighting a pilot light in a 30 year old roper gas range

Lift the top lid and look for a cylinder or something similar with tubing going into it there should be a button of some sort on the side. if you are lucky the button will have a red cap on it. press the button in and light the pilot inside the oven. hold the button for a minute or so until the pilot stays on. kind of like lighting a water heater.
