Will either be the start capacitor (in the box on top of the motor) or something binding the impeller or potentially both.

There is a fan cowling on the rear end of the pump try this;
- Turn the power off
- Remove the cowling
- See if the fan allows you to spin freely/easily the pump
BE SURE nothing could become entangled in the fan
- Turn pump back on
- If it starts, probably something on the impeller side
- If it doesn't but will start with a little turn of the fan probably the capacitor. Get a new one from Jaycar or RS components

Remember to put the cowling back on safely.

SOURCE: POOL PUMP MOTOR MAKES HUMMING NOISE BUT WILL NOT START

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

It could be the pump is bound up but it is more likely the motor is failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage. Otherwise please reply with specific questions about what you find for more direction.

Motor cuts out after running for 15 mins. Then comes on again after a few mins. Why?

Sounds like it is overheating.
Because of electrocution hazard around pools I suggest replace any of it if you even suspect a problem.

Pump hums when switched on but does not work more than 20 seconds

hi i had the same problem with my booster pump motor it hum but did not turn. to make a long story short see if there is a metal cap on the back of your motor if there is pry it off and you should get to see the shaft turn the shaft with a screwdriver if it has a notch in it or if it don't turn the shaft anyway you can and make sure it turns easy. my shaft was tight as hell but i got it to turn and it started right up again and i had no problem. the hum means it is stuck and it shuts off because the breaker is tripping and after a few seconds it will click back on again, hope this helps
