I have a sylvania 42" flat screen tv and it made a loud noise and turned off. When trying to turn it back on it would start and then turn off again. I tried this 2 more times and then a burning smell came from the back of the tv
First you should check the fuse and the wiring in your tv by removing the back cover. Make sure no wires are bare or touching. If there are any, wrap them with electrical tape.
If you cannot see anything wrong by looking, then it is probably the set has a bad transformer (high voltage)

OMG - the same exact thing happened to our 42"flat screen sylvania the other day... Im calling around right now to see who can fix it - what was your solution and how much did it cost you. Thanks for any info!!!!
You have a shorted diode. The repair is simple. You must snip one end of the diode and lift it just above the board. You will not replace the diode. What you will be doing,is disabling the standby light. The TV will operate just fine with out this. I need the model of this TV, to provide you with the location of the diode.
