I understand, and I appreciate your looking deep into both CPU's.
Are we talking about,
1) Intel Core2 Duo E6550, which has a maximum frequency rate, ('Speed'), of 2.33GigaHertz?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_intel_core_2_microprocessors#.22Conroe.22_.2865_nm.2C_1333_MT.2Fs.294MegaByte of L2 Cache, 1333MegaHertz Front Side Bus?
(4MB L2 cache / 1333MHz FSB)
Based on the Conroe Core technology, and the 65nanometer architecture? 0.85Volts to 1.50Volts - voltage range?
2) Intel Core2 Quad Q9550, which has a maximum frequency rate of 2.83GHz?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_intel_core_2_microprocessors#.22Yorkfield-6M.22_.2845_nm.292 times 3MB of L2 Cache, 1333MegaHertz FSB, Voltage range - 0.85 Volts to 1.3625 Volts?
Based on the Yorkfield-6M Core technology, and the 45NanoMeter architecture?
Don't know.
I just look at what motherboard chipset is used, then if it will support both a Dual Core, and a Quad Core; I look at the voltage range, and core technology/architecture.
http://www.fixya.com/support/p929676-gateway_gt5692_desktop_computerSo we are talking about a Gateway GT5692?
http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1015553R/1015553Rnv.shtmlComponents > Motherboards > 4006272R - Foxconn (Bengal) RS780 Motherboard > Specifications,
http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Shared/4006272R/4006272Rsp2.shtmlHa! So we are NOT talking an Intel CPU! (Processor)
Apparently not discussing a Gateway GT5692 Desktop PC, either.
What desktop computer are we talking about Virgil, and what is the motherboard chipset?

I have had really good luck with MSI.
ASUS makes most of the mother board in the world.
Current build is a foxconn. Wouldn't; recommend.
You pretty much get what you pay for with mother boards.
The main thing is to get only what you want . For example if you are not sound crazy do you really want 7.1 sound? What a person intends to use it for is more important. As a builder, I would go with the support available first. Seem to me that the air flow and otr other cooling has been far more important that which boards I use. hope this helps.
