I believe the problem is related to microsoft .NET Framework. I have researched and there are many posts of incompatibility between .NET Framework and many printers not just 1600. My 1600 stopped working and I traced the problem to upgrade to .NET Framework 3.5 I uninstalled 1600, then uninstalled .NET Framework 3.5 (and 3.0 as well for good measure), reinstalled 1600 and it is working fine now again. You can uninstall .NET versions using Add/Remove programs on the Control Panel. To avoid re-updating, I also turned off Windows automatic updates. I left .NET Framework 2.0. No problems with other programs but the computer did have trouble rebooting the very first time after I uninstalled .NET Framework 3.5 and 3.0. Unknown if that was related to the uninstall or a completely unrelated problem. Anyway if you want to try something less drastic than removing .NET versions, check out this Microsoft link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961118
refers to a printer fix related to .NET. In my experience, the Microsoft fixes never work but you are welcome to try before uninstalling .NET Framework versions.

HP colour laserjet 1600: I turn on printer and it switches from initialising to calibrating withour printing documents

Does the printer ever come to ready? If not, have you recently changed any of the toner cartridges? We have had cases with generic or refilled toners that will cause the printer to not be able to calibrate.

Just purchased a used hp clj 1600. USB interface is not recognized when plugging cable into computer. Tried 2 cables and 2 computers (Vista and XP Pro). Any suggestions?

The driver for the HP colour laserjet 1600 isn't built into windows, so it won't just recognise it.

You'll need to install the printer driver first (from the driver disc that should have been with the printer, or download it from HPs website).

Make sure you start this procedur with the printer SWITCHED OFF and UNPLUGGED, and follow the instructions given by the installation routine, especially waiting for the routine to tell you to plug in/turn on the printer.

I want to install win Xp Sp 2 but i can't do it

you need to have internet connection first then go to the website http://www.windowsupdate.com and you need to update the operating system from that site. in the process of updating it there will be an option there to update it to service pack 2 already.. sometimes you need to update other things first in the same website before that option comes up.

Windows xp with not recongise HP Laserjet 6p when plugged into a usb port

To my knowledge, the 6P isn't a USB printer, it's parallel port only. Are you using a USB / parallel port adapter? If so, I believe that's the root of your problems - the adapter.

Try hooking it directly to the parallel port (shut the PC and printer down before doing so).

Upon restart, Windows will detect it, and may or may not "know" the model, so you may have to choose it from the dropdown boxes.

If it works when directly connected, you will need to either locate drivers for the adapter (if any), or manually configure it under the printer port properties.

If you need more help, let me know. These are great little printers - once you get them to work!
