How do I reset the ink levels?

As there is no posting yet for the C5280, the next best thing is to post it here for the C5180, (what the differenc e is I don't know). Anyway, I just bought the C5280, and as with ALL new printers it came with just enough ink to print about 60 pages, now the ink has run out I bought an ink refill kit, and it showed me how to refill the cartridges, they are now full, but the machine's display still shows the ink as empty, my old printer's cartridges had a chip on it, that I used a chip resetter and voila, I could print over 1,000 pages without needing to refill again, but this HP? Well, I may have to take it back and get a cheap one, then have a seperate scanner, if I can't reset the ink levels.

  1. Check the estimated ink levels remaining in the print cartridges.
  2. Open the Printer Toolbox . There are two ways to do this:- Open HP Solution Center , select Settings , and then Printer Toolbox. If the HP Solution Center method does not work, open Printers and Faxes in the Windows Control Panel, then right-click the printer icon and choose Printing Preferences . Click the Features tab, and then click the Printer Services button. If the print cartridges are low or out of ink, you might need to replace the print cartridges.

NOTE: The HP All-in-One can only detect the ink levels for genuine HP ink. The ink levels in print cartridges that are refilled or have been used in other devices might not register accurately.

    Clean the contacts

Gather the following items to clean the cartridge and
    carriage:
Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if
distilled water is not available. Tap water can contain contaminants that damage
    the cartridge.
Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material
that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
Sheets of paper or a paper towel to rest the cartridge
    on during cleaning.
Open the product cover and wait until the carriage is
    idle and silent.
Remove the cartridge and place it on a piece of paper
with the nozzle plate facing up.
Note:- Clean the contacts quickly so that the
cartridge is not outside of the product for more than 30 minutes. If the
cartridge is outside of the product for too long, the ink can dry and clog the
    nozzles.
Unplug the product from the electrical
    outlet.
Dip a swab in the clean water and squeeze it to remove
most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
    Clean the cartridge contacts.
Cautions:- Do not touch the ink
    nozzles.
    Figure 1:
    Cartridge contacts

Clean the contacts in the carriage, inside the
    product.
    Figure 2: Carriage
    contacts

Either let the cartridge sit for 10 minutes to allow
the cleaned area to dry, or use a new swab to dry it.

      Reinstall the cartridge.
Reconnect the product to the electrical
      outlet.

      Close the product cover

Well, theres the problem. Most printers can remember up to three cartridges. That includes color & black. The best way to put it is that each cartridge has a"funger print" that the printer can read, and estimated ink levels can be gaged. There is a way to "reset" the cartridges, but i do not have the document on me. Please email [email protected] and I'll send it today. I'm not saying it will work 100%, as the reset method is geared for the 56/57/58, but who knows right?

How to reset the ink level on a HP C5180

You have to purchase new inks. If you have refills, it will not detect the ink levels due to the chip on the ink cartridge. When inks have been refilled, There is no way to reset the chip.

What is error 0xc05d1281

Apparently its a Ink System Failure. Here's an email thread for comment for HP C6180 with error 0xc05d1281 => http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/50063

It's posted somewhere in the middle of the thread.

Here's a solution to reset your printer to factory defaults without using your ink for recalibration.

1. Unplug the printer and wait 30 seconds for power to discharge.
2. Plug in the printer.
3. Hold the CANCEL and OK buttons simultaneously, and keep them depressed while you hit the ON button. This resets the printer.
4. When the printer turns on, if you still get the error message, it's OK. Then perform the steps listed above, starting with pressing the * and # key.
5. After you perform the steps listed above, when you are at the step at the end where you are pressing the cancel button until you get to the WELCOME screen, if at some point you see a message, “Inproper shutdown, hit OK”, go ahead and hit OK and the Welcome screen should appear.
One thing that is nice about this method is that it doesn't use up all your ink doing a recalibration.
