Ittermittent digital audio drop out on some channels

Yes, this is weird. I have FIOS and an HD receiver. All of the HD channels work fine, video and audio, except for three: Fox News, Fox Business, and National Geographic. When watching these channels, the audio from the set top box to the Onkyo's home theater setup drops out. The drop out frequency and durations is totally random; from 3 times to 8 times a minute; sometimes for 4 or 5 seconds each.

This only happens on the three HD channels. I can switch to analog audio and no problemo. Back to digital and it stinks. FIOS can't help me. I have exchanged set tob boxes with exactly the same results. Otherwise, the receiver works perfectly in every way.

I didn't think anyone could help.

FIOS says that it's not their problem. Two set top boxes do the same thing.

But the problem only occurs on three of the HD channels and with any other channel.

I have what may be the same / similar problem with my new Onkyo TX-SR806 receiver. The audio drop-outs sound like decode errors - you can hear the processor struggling to figure out what channel to place the sounds.

The problem occurs with my Motorola / Comcast settop box (connected via HDMI) while watching Dollhouse. It occurs only when the program is outputting Dolby Digital 5.1 (the commercials are fine). It also occurs far worse decoding DD5.1 from my xbox 360. I've had similar, but less frequent / annoying problems with HDMI input sound from my Samsung BD-P1600 BluRay Player, too (sound drop outs once every 1-5 minutes of 1-3 seconds each, whether played BD or DVD sources). Like you, I originally thought it was the player, until it started happening across multiple digital audio inputs / formats.

The sound is fine from each of these devices when run analog / stereo.

Contacted Onkyo customer support, who authorized a replacement receiver. We'll see.

Problem resolved with a new Onkyo receiver, supplied by the factory at an extremely low partial warranty price. I'm happy.

Did the issue ever get resolved. I have similar issues with a connection to Cox Cable HDTV and Onkyo TX-DX989. All sources (DVD Player) sound fine and not issues except channels 706 and 710 on Cox Digital receiver. I had Cox replace the HDTV receiver and the same issue occurs. I've tried optical audio and also the COAX audio ports with the same issue. The workaround I have found is to set the audio to "Other" on the Cox box, but the volume then has to be turned up quite a bit.

I got a hd box and the channels keep cuttin out

Hello, I actually install HD boxes for Verizon Fios. If your video signal is too low, you will notice "Pixellation" (Those weird square boxes that come and go) and in some cases, you will not even be able to receive some channels at all. HD channels use much more bandwidth than standard definition channels. The good news....there's a fix. If you use standard cable (Not Fios) you can buy a signal booster. These can be purchased at best buy, Radio Shack, etc. It is a powered device that plugs into an outlet (110v) You take your cable company's input or "Feed" run it into the booster, connect the power, and the run a coax cable out of the booster and into your splitter. Assuming all of your cabling is up to par, this will fix your problem. If you have Verizon Fios, you must call and have us come out as our tv service uses "Moca" and cannot be boosted with a store bought unit. I hope this helps.

Verizon fios remote codes for samsung receiver

I have the Samsung Sound Bar WS1R model. I tried all of the Samsung codes; TV, audio receiver, and audio amplifier. The DVD code 3918 worked for my Verizon FiOS remote. Program it to your AUX button and it will control the volume while your other buttons; channel, menu, etc work the set top box. I hope it works for you too!

I have a Marantz SR5004 AV Surround Receiver. There is an HDMI cable from the cable box to the Marantz and another from the Marantz to a Samsung HDTV. Everything is fine when the cable box is set to an HD...

Hello First off i would determine if the same thing happens when the cable box is connected directly to the TV with the hdmi cable.

If the picture goes out get a new box from your cable company.

If it works fine then its time to call Marantz

My Denon avr 4310 does a similar thing and after a lot of research it seems that the problem is with how digital signals are sent through the HDMI cable and how the control board of your receiver processes those signals.

Here what I mean

HDMI is meant to simplify connections by transmitting video, audio and CONTROL signals through 1 cable.

The problem becomes when you introduce a "middleman" in this case your receiver the control signal doesn't always get interpreted correctly.

My TV has the capability to "turn off" the "control" signal coming through the cable if yours does try that first (i have a sharp 52" led) this solved some of the issues.

My receiver has the capability to accept different inputs and merge them so here is how I get around the problem.

1. I use HDMI for video signal but also use the optical for audio this allows me to send the "complete" hdmi signal through the receiver and to the TV this complicates things but also allows you to get audio through your tv speakers so if you want to watch something late at night you aren't waking people up when the receiver gets loud. This stopped things like the video flickering or turning off.

You will have to play with your menu's to see if you can do this on your unit.

How to fix this easily? Dump HDMI and use component (red, blue green RCA's) for video yes its still HD and yes you will have to run audio separately. but it eliminates all the digital processing issues that receiver manufacturers haven't worked out.

I was pretty upset when I spent $1500 for my Denon receiver and Denon then told me that HDMI doesn't always make anything better.

Hope that helps

When watching HD channels the sound drops out for a second and gets really annoying when watching sports or movies.. as if the HTR-5940 cannot keep up with the digital feed... do I need to replace the...

If it's thru Cable TV, your feed may need an amp. If your on FIOS or DSS, I'm stumped. How many boxes are in your house and how many locations are set up for TV and have no TV hooked up? If any, you need to try "F" caps at the empty locations, it causes signal loss. If all locations are terminated, the Cable company needs to ramp up the feed. They can do this via phone if you have Comcast or Bright House, otherwise, just call and ask. Hope this helps

Is the HDMI from the HD TV A/V go to the out HDMI?

No..... (In theory, yes.) In practical application, no. Run HDMI from your source directly to the TV then use digital coaxial or optical for audio to the receiver. There are many problems with HDMI while processing it thru a receiver. For all the info on HDMI problems, Google "HDMI problems" and there are literally 1000's of posts and articles to read regarding the current issues. Hope this helps

Zoom Function and Verizon Fios TV

On the verizon FIOS tv box, turn the FIOS STB on, and turn on the tv, tap the following buttons on the Verizon FIOS STB )in this order) 1-Power, then Select, then Menu. This will bring up the FIOS STB HD options. Arrow down to 4:3 Bypass and set the bypass option to 480P. Hit power 2 times, once to turn off, second time to turn STB back on. This should on standard channels give you the zoom feature back. This worked on my Samsunf 5053 TV model.
