Should have unplugged it when you noticed the smell.

UNPLUG and remove and look at lamp you installed--is something in the housing where lamp goes melted? I hope you did not touch the face of the bulb with your hand or fingers.

What ever is wrong find it before trying to use set again.

It was on and then it went off... now when I turn it on the green light comes on and then it make a funny whirling noise and then 5 seconds later it does it again but the picture never comes back on and...

the same thing happend to me you need a new lamp. Your lamp burned out you can buy a new one at a electronic parts store or find it online or call the tv company and see if you can buy one dont turn it on any more, it could be bad for the tv.

Horrible burning smell from lamp

If you ordered it directly from sony then i would be concerned and contact the to have it replaced under warranty. If you did not get it directly from sony I would expect it is a rebuilt lamp or you purchased just the lamp part instead of the whole cartridge and installed it into the carttridge yourself. The lamp is designed to be replaced as a cartridge . The smell is probly a lamp that is burning the wires on the back side of the lamp because it is incorrectly inserted and the wires are touching the glass. Just a couple times i have seen a lamp that will smell slightly as the plastic and insulation heats up for the first time. But it only smells a little for like a day.

Projector problem

I have a great deal of experience with that projector in particular.
The burning smell along with the circle on the screen can be one of two thing in the same general area. Both are not good.
The lamp assembly has its own dedicated cooling fans. these fans can sometimes **** in dust and insects. the lamp runs at a very high temperature and can burn those things quickly. I have often found old lamps with particles fused to the glass.
The other situation is that the lamp burned something and it got stuck to the glass somewhere in the light path.
if I remember right the projector monitors the temprature of the bulb and will shutdown if it gets too hot.
Runco is based in california and has a great turn around time on projectors. Unfortunately with Runco you would be hard pressed to find a technician that wouldn't just send it to them for repairs anyways. The major down side with Runco is that customers cannot talk directly to engineers or service men.
Locate a Runco authorized retailer in your area, check runcoes site. and give them a call to see if they cant send it to runco for you. if you cannot find one in your area call Roscor or Blair & Associates in Chicago.
