Windows does not see full size of new Hard drive

Hi
I have just installed Sata 1tb Seagate Barracuda internal hard drive.
Whilst Bios appears to see the full capacity,when I go to 'my computer'
and click on c drive it only shows as being 127 gig.
How can I get windows to see the full capacity?

Is your disk correctly partitioned?

  1. Right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Manage.
  3. Click Disk Management.
Find your newly installed disk and see if there is any unpartitioned space on it. If there is, just create a new partition, or delete the previous one so you can create the partition which will consume full size of the disk.

    Regardless you bought new or used hard disk, it might be only partly partitioned.

    Please follow the steps described, and see if you have any unpartitioned space (free space) on your hard disk.

    Unpartitioned space example is shown here.
    If your partition looks the way F and G shows in the example (there is no free space before and after them), then your disk is properly partitioned.
    If you see there is some free space, then you will need to follow the solution I provided you.

    We can walk through this, put you will need to confirm that there is no free space left by following solution provided.

  • Anonymous Jan 16, 2009

    Also pay attention to the size of disk, and please write it here. (720 MB and 324 MB in the previous example)

    Thank you. I'm another person who was having problems with XP not seeing the entire capacity of my HD. After taking your instructions, I'm good now. Thanks!

By default, the original release version of Windows XP Home Edition and of Windows XP Professional do not have 48-bit LBA support. Your computer must meet the following requirements to use 48-bit LBA ATAPI support:

  • 48-bit LBA-compatible BIOS.
  • 137-GB hard disk or larger.
  • You must have Windows XP SP1 installed.
For the original release version of Windows XP Home Edition or of Windows XP Professional, you can enable 48-bit LBA for testing purposes. To do this, set the EnableBigLba registry value to 1 in the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters\Warning Data corruption may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
  • You use this registry value to enable 48-bit LBA support in the original release version of Windows XP Home Edition or of Windows XP Professional.
  • You install an earlier version of Windows on a disk partition that was previously created by a 48-bit aware operating system, such as Windows XP SP1. And that disk partition is equal to or larger than the current addressable limit of 137 GB.
Note The previous registry setting is ignored in Windows XP SP1 and later. If you try to enable the 48-bit LBA ATAPI support in the original release version of Windows XP Home Edition or of Windows XP Professional by editing the previous registry setting, and you did not meet the minimum requirements, the following issues may occur:
  • The registry value EnableBigLba is disabled. If you have a 48-bit compatible BIOS that can support a hard disk that has a capacity that is greater than 137 GB, only the first 137 GB of the hard disk are addressable. The rest of the hard disk is not used.
  • The registry value EnableBigLba is enabled, but you do not have a 48-bit LBA compatible BIOS and the capacity of the hard disk is not greater than 137 GB.

    If you enable the 48-bit LBA ATAPI support by editing the registry setting, but you lack both a 48-bit LBA compatible BIOS and a hard disk that has a capacity that is see comment than 137 GB, you have not changed the system. The hard disk continues to function as a standard hard disk.
  • The registry value EnableBigLba is enabled without a 48-bit LBA compatible BIOS, but you have a hard disk with a capacity that is larger than 137 GB.

    If you enable 48-bit ATAPI support in the registry and you have a hard disk that has a capacity that is see comment than 137 GB, but you do not have a 48-bit LBA compatible BIOS, only the first 137 GB of the hard disk are addressable. The remainder of the hard disk is not used.
To enable 48-bit LBA support by using an unattended installation with the Microsoft System Preparation (Sysprep) tool, follow these steps:
  1. Copy the following text into Notepad and save the text as the 48bitLba.inf file: [version]
    signature="$CHICAGO$"
    SetupClass=BASE

    [DefaultInstall]
    AddReg=48bitlba.Add.Reg

    [48bitlba.Add.Reg]
    HKLM,"System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters","EnableBigLba",0x10001,1
  2. Create a file named Cmdlines.txt that includes the following lines:

    [Commands]
    "rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 128 .\48BITLBA.INF"
  3. Locate the Sysprep\I386 folder in the Sysprep image, and then create a $OEM$ subfolder in this folder.
  4. Copy the 48bitlba.inf and Cmdlines.txt files into the Sysprep\I386\$OEM$ folder.
  5. In your Sysprep.inf file, add a key named InstallFilesPath to the [Unattended] section. This key must have the following value: InstallFilesPath = "C:\sysprep\i386"
To add the previous settings to the images folder that was created with the Riprep.exe program, follow these steps:
  1. On the remote installation server that contains the Riprep image, create a Sysprep\I386\$OEM$ folder in the following folder: RemoteInstall\Setup\Language\images\Riprep_dir_name\I386\Mirror1\UserDataNote Language is "English" for the English language, and Riprep_dir_name is the unique name that you selected for the Riprep image.
  2. Copy the 48bitlba.inf and Cmdlines.txt files into the $OEM$ folder.
  3. Modify the Riprep.sif file (and any other template files for this Riprep image that you have created) in the following folder:RemoteInstall\Setup\Language\images\Riprep_dir_name\I386\Templates\Riprep.sif To do this, add the OemPreinstall and InstallFilesPath values:

    [Unattended]
    OemPreinstall = "Yes"
    InstallFilesPath = "C:\sysprep\i386"
  4. Close and then save the file.

My hard disk dosent get detected but if i touch it then i can feel motor inside is rotating please help

could be the sata cable not seated properly or bad cable. check connections. If its the only sata drive connected make sure it's plugged into sata #1 slot. Could be drive, motherboard or bios problem. Next step would be to update the bios. That might help.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 show 0MB issue

I would first look for a bios update for your motherboard to see if that helps at all.

If your bios did not fully support 1TB and special installation software was used to make it work by a method that uses overlay that would cause it to run slowly

To make it run faster I would have set up a primary partion of around 100GB and installed to that and left the rest of the drive formatted for general storage.

You may still want to look at that as an option.

If not and you did use any overlay software you are going to be restricted to slow speeds try putting it in another computer and transfer anything you want from it that way. when you are done you can actually delete the partitions etc using the other computer to do so.

You could also set it up on there ready to try re-install windows XP

Or it could just be that you have a nasty and I would certainly try get data off and re-format whilst you are at it if you have

SECOND HARD DRIVE NOT RECOGNIZED

Change the settings of you IDE drives in your BIOS. Set your secondary boot device to HDD1. Also make sure that your primary HDD is set to master and the secondary HDD is slave. The jumper is found at the back of the hard drive where you connect the power and IDE cables. Try this and post back as to how it went..

Seagate 160GB SATA Hard Drive Installation.

Hi, Was the original 20Gb HD also a SATA or was it installed as an IDE? Try installing a fresh clean Windows rather than the restore disc. However, you will need the drivers for the SATA 160Gb and press F6 when Windows installers ask you to. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information. Hope this be of some idea/help. Good luck and kind regards.
