Which operating system ?

Normally your computer will turn on a screen saver or enter sleep mode after a certain period of idle time, to protect your monitor from suffering a "burn in" of an image that appears on the screen for extended periods of time. This also helps to save electricity during periods of inactivity. Vista owners report via Internet tech help forums a seemingly rampant "bug" that causes the machine to freeze after being left idle for long periods. No single factor seems to cause this, and instead requires troubleshooting and trial and error to find a fix that works.

Screen Saver Failure
When your computer freezes after a long idle period, it could be due to a malfunctioning screen saver. Turn your screen saver off, by clicking "Start" and then "Control Panel." Under "Appearance and Personalization," click "Personalization" and select "Screen Saver." Select "None" under the screensaver drop-down list and hit OK. Pay attention next time your computer goes idle for reappearance of the problem. b> Power Saving Options b> Windows Vista provides users a way to select how their computers behave after sitting idle for a certain amount of time. In many cases, the hard drive and monitor are instructed to enter sleep mode or even shut down after they've been idle for a specified time frame. To check or alter your settings, click the "Start" button and then "Control Panel." Under the System and Maintenance icon, click "Power Options." Under this tab you can change the amount of time before your system goes to sleep, and the actions it takes after reaching the idle time. Malware b> When mysterious things begin happening to your computer for no apparent reason, there's a good chance a malware program is behind it. Malware are nasty, hidden programs that download themselves onto your computer to cause havoc and even steal your personal information. These invaders monopolize your CPU, clog your RAM, and generally make using your computer unpleasantly slow and frustrating. Their presence can affect everything from program operation to operating system functionality. Always update and run malware protection software regularly to keep these pests out of your computer. b> Update Windows and BIOS b> Your computer's operating system and BIOS files are responsible for proper operation and functionality. Over time, these files can become outdated, requiring patches, fixes and other updates to correct compatibility and security problems in your computer. Microsoft provides regular updates for its Vista operating system to correct reported problems. The BIOS in your computer is programmed into the motherboard, so the board's manufacturer may have an update available for your version. In many cases, the brand that sells the computer may offer a link to the BIOS update, so check with Microsoft for any updates available. b> Too Many Processes b> Your computer will register as "idle" if you haven't used it, even if you have programs open on the screen. After a certain amount of time, the system will send the data you were working on to the RAM as the system settles into sleep mode. When trying to wake the system after this idle period, it may have a hard time resuming the programs that are open, causing a freeze. Close down any program you are not actively working in to save the CPU from unnecessary work, and lessen the load placed on the RAM when it's left idle. right mouse click in the bottom toolbar select task manager applications if you see something running that should not be running select end now you might even uninstall that specific program if its no longer needed also in the processes tab see whats ticking over in the background might be a virus or malware. SOURCE: Can I run 2 operating systems on an HP a1540n?

The general answer is: Yes, you can!
It is even ideal if you are using two different hard drives, because you can use the whole disk and you don't have to re-partition. Depending on which OS's you want to install, you have to go different ways.

The crucial question is always the bootloader - the start screen in which you choose which OS you want to start.

You did not mention which OS's you want to install, so the only advice I can give you right now is to google "[OS1] [OS2} Dualboot" and work your way through.

If you have any more questions or need specific advice, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

2133 hp notebook freezes at startup repair disks that came with do nothing

The DVD driver is critical to loading the operational system, did you try setting the boot order on the usb storage device, from your comments you have done that. The only other thing you can try is remove one stick of ram and power up, if no! remove the second one and replace the first piece and try again, "long shot" but worth the try. If none of these work you may have a hard drive issue, or windows files have been corrupted.

Whenever i put on my hp mini,it says smart disk error. whenever i try restoring back to factory settings, it freezes up when it gets to 2 percent. after waiting a while it says the system fails to restore,...

Hi there,
Smart Disk Error has something to do with the Hard drive of your computer. I think the reason it's showing the message is that your Hard drive is about to fail. If restoring it to factory settings freezes on the same point every time chances are that part of the hard where the data is stored is busted (unreadable) better do what it says to contact hp so that they can conduct hardware diagnostics on your hard drive. Better yet, have it replaced if it's still under warranty.
Hope this helps!

Installing seems to freeze in the process

If you are installing an operating system and it freezes in the process, it could be due to several factors:

Scratched disc, - in this case replace the disc and try again.

sketchy CD-ROM drive, - in this case, try a different drive and try again.

sketchy Hard-Drive - run diagnostics from the console such as chkdsk to verify the health of your hard drive. Console is available on most operating system discs. (sometimes called recovery console, or repair console) If the hard drive is bad, you may have to replace it to continue.

insufficient RAM. - this is rarely the case, but it could be that your system is trying to load too much into ram to complete the installation. If this is the case, you can add ram to your system.

If any of this seems to be over your head, or troubling, there are professionals available who can check it out for a flat rate (usually affordable) to diagnose the problem and give you some direction.

This problem is really wide ranged, and could be many things. Information such as what percentage it freezes, or what screen it freezes, the model of the pc, and the version of the operation system (windows xp, vista, 7, linux, mac, etc) could also help to narrow it down.

Id check the disc and go from there.

Hp pavilion freezes at startup

Will it start in SAFE mode? Reboot and press F8 before Windows loads. This will give a small menu about different SAFE modes and Normal mode. Select SAFE mode and allow system to start. If the system starts fine then you have corrupted drivers and/or a virus which is corrupting your drivers. Download AVGFREE.exe, MALWAREBYTES.exe and SUPERANTISPYWARE.exe and run these. Now goto START, Run and type SFC/scannow and have your original disks handy because any corrupted drivers will have to be replaced. Now try to reboot into NORMAL mode. If OK you're done. If not OK or even in SAFE mode all you see is the cursor then the laptop needs to go to a reputable repair person or check my website www.micromendllc.com

Hp 6220's freeze up until a little pressure is applied..

Is your hard drive installed properly? It may be that the connection pins are not making good contact.

Remove the hard drive and reinstall it. It may solve the problem.

It might possibly be the motherboard circuitry, however, if it were I would imagine that the computer would show an error message on boot-up during POST.

Were the computers dropped or somehow bumped hard?

HP Lattitude D600 Laptop freezes up

It could be a number of things. . Sometimes the unit will freeze when it overheats.. Have a look around the exhaust vents and see if there is excessive dust built up around there. If you notice any, you may have to take it in to get checked. If you are tech-saavy, then take it apart and clean out the CPU fan. Also make sure that there is good airflow around the vent when operating the unit.

If this is not the case, then you should take some notes to see if there is a trend when this happens. What sort of apps are running when it freezes at the 45 min mark. Is it only on battery? If so, its possible the battery is running out of juice and the software is not throwing the correct warnings - it just freezes the machine (this is exactly what my Asus EEEPC does to me when I let it run wayyy down on the battery - it freezes. However, it warns me a few minutes ahead of time). Try yours on AC and see if it has the same problem. If not, then its likely your battery. You may need to go in and tweak your power management settings to make sure that it warns you when the battery level is low.

Hp dvd lightscribe dual layer burner problem

It could be that your drive is just getting wore out.

It could be the amount of data on your hard drive. I have noticed systems do tend to operate poorly once the hard drive get's 50% or more full. This is because windows uses part of the hard drive as memory so when the hard drive is getting full it has less memory to work with and things start to slow down and even freeze.

One slight possibility could be that the power supply has become weak and is not able to deliver the necessary power to the burner as it used to. One way to test this is to remove all devices that consume power from the power supply except for the necessary ones like the hard drive, keyboard, and mouse and see if it improves any.

If you have another computer or have a friend with a computer you can try the dvd burner in you can rule out the power supply or the rest of your system, for that matter, being a problem.
