Using Wireless + PPPoE at the same time kills router. SMCWBR14-G2

Hello. I've got a SMC Barricade wireless router (SMCWBR14-G2). I connect to the internet wia a PPPoE connection. Everything is okay for as long as i keep the wireless module disabled. Once i activate the wireless module, the router hangs, i can't connect to it anymore, and only a hard reset helps to get the router up again (but it's reseted to factory defaults).
Normally the LEDs keep flashing but when it hangs, all leds (besides the WAN port) are lit but don't flash anymore. I also noticed that while the whole router was freezed (could not connect to it's default address -192.168.2.1 - ping not working also, the LAN ports were still operational, so i could actually see my other LAN computers.
Another thing i saw was that the router always died ONLY after i make the settings for the PPPoE connection. Why can't i use PPoE to connect to the internet (via WAN) and wireless at the same time?
PS: I upgraded the firmware to the latest available (1.09) and the router still freezes when activating
If anyone can help, i'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi,
From your description, I am assuming you have a direct ethernet connection from an RJ45 connection in a jack in the wall. If this is the case, then you would just need to purchase a wireless router (linksys, D-link, netgear, etc). Connect the ethernet connection from the wall to the routers internet or WAN port. You will need to access the routers firmware configuration and set it to connect with PPPoE, so get your username and password from your ISP if you are not sure what it is.

You will be able to continue to have the PC plugged into the router with an ethernet cable, and then run the laptop with a wireless connection, just be sure to configure the laptop with the security key if applicable.

If you were using a software PPPoE connection on your PC, quit using it. Just set your network adapters on both computers to DHCP, and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps

Op de SMCWBR14-G2 sttat geen reset toets op. Hoe kan ik deze router dan resetten?

Probeer:

Well, once reset you will need to login to the interface and resetup all the connection information. You can do that from the WEB interface just logon and reset. No special software (except a web browser) is needed.
I think the SMC default address is http://192.168.2.1 just log on and set it up. Resetting just restores the factory defaults, it does not erase the system.

Rarely does a router need software on a computer. Even the linksys that have a big sticker USE CD FIRST -- its only there for those who don't understand routers!

I use Wireless router Model: SMCWBR14-G2. My Office is use Staitc IP for Staff and DHCP for Customer. But DHCP is well work, static is not. I Re Configure this router. It is Ok!. But Gtalk can not use by...

We have used gtalk with static ip number. Sounds more like the port it uses isn't open. It could be that they block the port at your office. When using static ip numbers the gateway must be the number of the router in order for it to get out to the internet.

Manual for WBR14-G2 router [6.2 MB] in pdf format:
http://www.smc.com/files/AG/MN_SMCWBR14-G2.pdf

Keeping others from connecting to your router:
1. Have an "wired only" router login access or for this router "change and disable your SSID". This way you avoid that others can login to
to the router changing your settings: See page 48 of the manual.
1.1 Wireless Network Name (SSID): change the default name SMC
to "any private name" ( and remember for later login )
1.2 Broadcast Wireless Network Name: change from default ENABLE
to DISABLE .

2. Make a secure wireless encryption key for your connection:
see page 87.
2.1 For most secure key select WPA / WPA2 only and SAVE SETTINGS .
2.2 See page 91 for entering and saving your secure key: the password
that must be entered to get access to the router.

Maybe it is an electricity problem, or it's nearing the end of it's life. I bought 2 routers till now.each one worked fine for 2 years and then never worked. You should buy a new one or check if there's something with the electricity . Maybe a higher voltage

Sounds defective. Disconnect it, flip it over and give it a smell. If you smell burnt wires or plastic (typically a faint smell, but a smell nonetheless) the router's toast.
