My kohler 20res runs fine on manual or during power outage, but on exercise it has engine spikes, and gasps for fuel. There is no load. IS this normal? what is it only on exercise?

On your Automatic Transfer Switch ( the little gray box you see on the right in the picture above) you have two blue buttons. One is a Manual test switch. The other has a clock on it and this is your exercise set button. Hold it down for a FULL 3 seconds if you want it to excercise without a load (not powering your home) Hold it down for a FULL 6 seconds if you want it to exercise with a load every week. Your generator will start and run for 20 minutes, and then shut down. Now every week your generator will exercise at the time and day that you pushed the set button.

Can't search for a manual without model, type, serial, etc numbers...
A few things to take a look at:
1) Oil level / pressure sending unit. This is normally bypassed as long as the start switch is pressed. When engine starts, and switch is released, engine will die if sending unit is defective, or you are low on oil.
2) Exhaust temperature sensors. Older units were notorious for burning these up.
3) Cooling Water Temperature sensor. These cause trouble often, but mostly due to water pump impeller being eaten away by galvanic action and not able to pump water as effecively. End result is water temp higher than normal, which trips the switch, which kills the engine.
4) Alternator (generator) output not as it should. If output doesn't rise to proper level within a few seconds of engine start, the engine will be shut down.
5) Choke not working as it should
6) Bad fuel, bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter.

I've had Kohler reps out to inspect and they said the hose isn't large enough. I have 3/4" and I believe specs call for 1". Ive asked my LP guy who said a direct line may help but a 1" isnt going to make that big of a difference. Any input there - does it need to be a) dedicated -OR- b) 1" line (following kohler specs). My neighbor has a generic 20kw with a 3/8" dedicated line with no issues so it makes me wonder if it is the line or the unit, which is brand new in Oct.
