SOURCE: 11 year old amana bottom freezer icemaker drips water when filling tray

Hello dunc444444
Welcome,
You said, Bottom freezer works fine, but upper refrigerator has no cold air

Is your freezer so full that it is packed to the top especially in the rear?
Refrigerators and freezers share the air from the compressor and travel through vents in the rear of the freezer and fridge.
Sometimes it can effect the cooling in the fridge if the freezer articles block the vents!

The water overfilling in the ice maker is an ice maker problem only.
When we install an ice maker there is a short white plastic tube that we push through the rear
hole of the fridge which supply's the water to the maker, the outside water line attaches to this.
That tube we push through the fridge must go in till it stops. And empties in to a little sistran at the rear of the ice maker. Make sure it did not sip out or backwards a little when you may have moved
rolled the fridge out to clean under it!

Also you need periodically to remove the front grill down in front of the fridge and gently run a refrigerator brush under the coils to clean out the dust that may block air flow over the coils.(the coils are metal black tubes that run back and forth along the bottom of your fridge.
The vacuum will not reach in to that tight space. That's why they make a special brush for this chore.
Let me know how you do?

If you have high humidity or the door gets opened a lot, the evaporator coil may need a good defrosting. There are defrosting devices in the unit like the timer, heating coils, thermostats that could be bad. There should also be a small fan in the freezer that transfers the air to the refrigerator section. If that's not spinning only the freezer will work.

If you find the fan and it's working you can do a thorough manual defrost by removing the food, unplugging the unit and letting it set for a day with the doors wide open. Have some big towels handy :)

After a day, plug it in and see what it does (don't add food, yet). If it cools down then you will know that the compressor is still good and it's worthwhile to fix.

Easy fixes: Timer and fan.
Moderate fix (cheap part - more labor) - Defrost thermosat
Pain in the **** fix: Defrost heaters.

If the freezer is not freezing. I am guessing that the refrigerator is not cold also. Here is link to an Amana Refrigerator Not Freezing. You will need to narrow down parts that are working and are not working. I would first pull the refrigerator out to make sure that the compressor and the condenser fan are running(the condencer fan motor runs to cool the compressor down). This is a link to a GE refrigerator condenser fan motor problem. The compressor and condenser fan motor are in the same place. This can give an idea at least where it is at. Make sure that the evaporator fan motor in the freezer is running also. Make sure that the rear freezer wall is not iced over. This can be a defrost problem. See what a defrost problem is HERE. If your unit is sitting there with the lights on but you hear no noise from any fan motor or your compressor. Your unit may be in a defrost mode. Locate your defrost timer. It looks as tho it is either located in the front behind the kick plate or in the back by the compressor. Here is a link to your units diagrams http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Amana-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-SQD23VW-P1315302WW/1268/0165000/P9060266/00011?componentDescription=&brandDescription=&searchTerm= or http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Amana-Parts/Refrigerator-Parts/Model-SQD23VWP1315302WW/1268/0165000?searchedModel=sqd23vw&blt=11 . Our amana refrigerator is making a noise, a hum and then a "click". The freezer is no longer working and the fridge part is no longer cold. It's a 2004 and we don't know whether to get...

It sounds like you are hearing the overload on the compressor closing. When the overload closes the relay tries to start the compressor (that might be the buzzing sound) and if the compressor doesn't start the overload opens and turns the compressor off. You will need to replace the relay on the compressor.

Hi,

Your problem could be one of two issues.

- The relay part number 12555902. This is a package that plugs directly onto the compressor, it is an easy repair.

- If the relay does solve the problem the issue is the compressor itself. This repair is major and usually will cost around $500.00 and will need to be done by a professional

My Freezer isn't getting cold. It sounds like the motor is coming on every 5 minutes or so and only staying on for about 1 minute

Hi,

I suspect by your description the fridge either has a faulty overload protector or the compressor itself is seized.

If you feel like you can trouble shoot further I`ll try to assist you or you may decide to call a professional appliance technician.

**FYI, Most of the Amana fridges have 5 to 10 years sealed system warranty which would include the compressor but not the electrical starting devices i.e., the overload & relay. Check your owners manual, it is the ultimate authority on warranty no matter what anyone else tells you according to Whirlpool/Amana.**

Hope that help`s move you forward if nothing else. If so please take a second and rate the reply to your inquiry you received here at fixya.

Thank you and good luck.

you can have the compressor replaced for around 500usd on the norm. that would be the most inexpensive way to go compared to a new unit , it will come with a 90 day-1 year warranty.

If the coils were really dirty, the compressor is probably just overheated. Let it cool down overnight then try again. If it still won't stay running it needs serviced. Could be the start relay or internal overload/overheat sensor in the compressor. If the coils were really dirty and it was used like this for a long time, the compressor could be damaged. It is almost never worth replacing a compressor in a home refrigerator.
