Why does connecting to an ad-hoc network disconnect the shared mobile broadband connection?

When WiFi device finds and connects to Ad-hoc wireless network, mobile broadband connection is disconnected.

You can be connected to two signals at one time, if I understand your statement. My question is, why is your laptop automatically connecting to a Ad-Hoc network? Set up a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network
An ad hoc network is a temporary connection between computers and devices used for a specific purpose, such as sharing documents during a meeting or playing multiple-player computer games. You can also temporarily share an Internet connection with other people on your ad hoc network, so those people don’t have to set up their own Internet connections. Ad hoc networks can only be wireless, so you must have a wireless network adapter installed in your computer to set up or join an ad hoc network.

Click to open Connect to a Network.

Click Set up a connection or network.

Click Set up an ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network, click Next, and then follow the steps in the wizard.

Notes
If one or more of the networked computers is joined to a domain, you need to have a user account on that computer to see and access shared items on it.

If the networked computers are not joined to a domain, but you want to require people to have a user account on your computer for access to shared items, turn on password protected sharing in Network and Sharing Center.

To turn on password protected sharing
Click to open Network and Sharing Center.

Under Sharing and Discovery, if password protected sharing is off, click the arrow button to expand the section, click Turn on password protected sharing, and then click Apply. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

An ad hoc network is automatically deleted after all users disconnect from the network or when the person who set up the network disconnects and goes out of range of the other users of the network, unless you choose to make it a permanent network when you create it.

If you share your Internet connection, Internet connection sharing (ICS) will be disabled if you disconnect from the ad hoc network, you create a new ad hoc network without disconnecting from the old ad hoc network for which you enabled ICS, or you log off and then log back on (without disconnecting from the ad hoc network).

If you set up an ad hoc network and share your Internet connection, and then someone logs on to the same computer by using Fast User Switching, the Internet connection will still be shared, even if you didn't intend to share it with that person.

Hello mates,

Finally after 4 hours of searching and trying I was able to hook my Nokia N95 to my laptop without router and browse internet on my mobile.

I tried using my laptop’s Wi-Fi Card as router or connection point between my pc and my phone.

This connection is known as “ad-hoc” connection. Ad hoc wireless networks work more like walkie-talkies, because the computers communicate directly with each other. By enabling Internet Connection Sharing on one of the computers, you can share Internet access.

Now lets see what do we need:

1. We need a Wi-Fi card on the computer
2. Internet connection that doesn’t use your Wi-Fi card (example Like mine: Cable-modem connected to my laptop through LAN).

Now Let’s Setup our Wi-Fi card as router:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click Network and Internet Connections.

3. Right-click your wireless network connection, and then click Properties.

4. In the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box, click the Wireless Networks tab.

5. Next, click the Advanced tab at the top of the window. Select Computer to computer (ad hoc) networks only and clear the Automatically connect to non-preferred networks box if it is selected. This setting, along with removing preferred networks, ensures connection to the ad hoc network only.

6. Click the Wireless Networks tab again. Under Preferred Networks, click Add,

7. In the Wireless Network Properties dialog box, specify a Network name (SSID). I chose (My Nokia N95).

8. Unclear the box “ the key is provided for me automatically”.

9. Type your Network key password and confirm it in the second Network key conformation box( your password has to be 5 characters or 13 characters ), Press Ok.

10. After configuring the network name (SSID) in the Wireless Network Properties dialog box, the new ad hoc network will be displayed with a PC Card icon to designate that this is a computer-to-computer network. Press also Ok.

11. Right-click the Wireless Network icon in the lower right corner of your screen, and then click View Available Wireless Networks..

12 . The Wireless Network Connection window appears and displays your wireless network listed with the SSID you chose( My Nokia N95). If you don't see your network, click Refresh Network List in the upper left corner. Do not click Connect in the lower right corner.

Now we have to share the internet:

14. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

16. Since I have a cable modem and it connected to my laptop through LAN so must share its connection with My Wi-FI card. Right-click the Local Area Connection and press properties.

17. Now you are in Local Area Connection Properties choose tab Advanced.

18 . select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box.

Now On Your Nokia N95 Phone (I have v20 Firmware) :

19 . Go to Menu>Tool> click on WLAN Wiz. Your Network name should appear ( in the example its “My Nokia N95”).

20. Select Option > Start Brwosing.

21. Now it should ask you for the Network key password you entered in step 9 and Press OK.

22. Now it opened the web so I chose Nokia Nseies web site ans start browse it.

23. While it connecting to” My Nokia N95” you should see that your phone Network status will appear Connected on your computer.

24. Wait for 30 Second and it will Open.

Note Important : you should turn you firewall off because it will block the connection and after you succeed connecting N95 to internet try configure your firewall so it will allow internet accesing.

  • First, we need to create the Ad hoc network that will provide wireless connection between your computer and printer. On the right hand portion of the Taskbar, you can right-click the wireless icon and choose "View Available Wireless Networks". Or you can double click the wireless icon, then click "View Wireless Networks". It is also accessible from the Control Panel. Either way, the same window as shown in step 2 will pop-up.

Make it more intuitive so you can easily recognize your own network just in case there are other Ad hoc in range. Check off the automatic key and enter a 5 or 10 digit network key. This is the same key that you will input at the printer later. Click OK and then OK again. You are now connected to the Ad hoc network. You are half way through.

Go to Wireless Menu and press OK. Press the arrow to go to Setup Wizard and press OK so the printer will automatically search for wireless networks in range. From the list of networks, find the SSID or Ad hoc name that you created and press OK and type in the network key using the alphanumeric keypad on the printer. The printer should confirm the connection in less than a minute. That's it! Try to print a test page to make sure everything is working properly.

    Laptop normally have single chip WiFi or Wireless Cards...

    These cards could be used as client(connecting to wireless router), adhoc or access point(a WiFi card could be used as Access Point to route your LAN(Wired) connection on WLAN)...

    Your laptop WiFi card is already busy as a Cleint, so if you want to use it as AdHoc, you have to remove all the other connection with the WIreless...ie, Disconnect the WLAN from connecting other devices, and follow the below mentioed steps to connect your device..

    When you are using Client mode you are not able to use it on Ad-hoc or Access Point feature...

    Setup laptop to Ad-Hoc
    1)Navigate to control panel and choose network connection, Right click on the Wireless network connection and click on the Properties on Wireless NIC
    2) Click-Wireless Networks Tab
    3) Click-Add
    4) Provide SSID Name, name to identify you rnetwork
    5)Security -Net Auth: Open
    6)Make -Data Encryption: Disabled
    7) In the check box present-Check on This is a Computer to Computer (ad-hoc) network.
    Change the IP address of the Wireless NIC card, by choosing TCp IP in the properties of WLAN and choosing TCP/IP v4 from the installed service

    TCP/IP on Laptop
    -IP: 10.0.0.1
    -Subnet: 255.255.255.0

    TCP/IP on iPhone
    -Static IP
    -IP: 10.0.0.2
    -Subnet: 255.255.255.0

    Now try searching for Wireless through your phone, you should able to connect..

    NETGEAR Wireless G USB Adaptor Problems
    I contacted Bigpond after my whole internet collapsed due to my amature abilities in fixing the internet. >_<" yet they fixed my internet connection by disconnecting my current (DLINK DIR-300) router from the network. hmmmm... the technician also confirmed that my current broadband modem (2WIRE 2071-A) isnt capable of supplying a shared connection to more than one computer!! she also directed me towards a modem with an inbuilt wifi router that "supposedly" is the best option right now. (2701HGV-W) I'm a bit shaky and the stupid NETGEAR adaptor problem still exists - im willing to buy the new modem if its guaranteed to abolish this problem and give me a better internet wise outlook - please any suggestions will be appreiciated =)

    for windows xp you man set up the connection via cable or bluetooth and ms active sync - the htc (windows mobile) is able to use the hosts network connection.
    you may also set up an ad-hoc wlan on you eee and turn on internet connection sharing for your mobile broadband connection. if you connect your eee to the ad-hoc wlan it should be able to access the internet

    Ive got verizon wireless broadband for my lap top and cant seem to be able to get online with ps3
    Can you provide more information?  The Verizon Wireless broadband access is for your laptop only.  In order for the PS3 to take advantage of it, you'll have to setup Internet Connection Sharing on your laptop. That way your PS3 can connect to your laptop via your laptop's wireless connection (in Ad Hoc mode since you don't have a wifi network) and access the internet via the VzW Broadband Access.
