HP Officejet 6310 ALL-in-One---Scanner issue

I am trying to scan some photos, however the error on the printer reads: no scan options Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot. Which I did, but there is no info there that correlates.

After plugging in my usb cable I keep getting this error msg that reads: files needed: The file 'HPZid412.sys' on hp cd is needed. I only have one hp cd that came with this system, for my Windows XP. The msg continues, type the path where the file is located, and then click ok.

I did a search for that HPZid412.sys and pulled up a file, but don't know what it means by path.

Any advice?

To be more specific, I am placing the photo on my scanner and clicking scan to computer, then I get the error msg

I have the same problem. Try to scan and I get the error message 'No scan options, refer to device documentation' but there isn't anything that correlates.

I go to the setup menu, then 'how do I' and it reads 'no computer connection'. How can this be when the fax and printer elements work fine? All appears to be plugged in and connected ok....

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I don't understand the one solution that was presented there. I am having the same problem with both the scanner and fax machine.

Can't scan- Refer to device documentation to

Try using widows paint. Look in windows accessories off the start program menu. If you open windows paint, look for open file from "Scanner or Camera". Most likely you can get the scanner to work again in Vista. Otherwise...try Vuescan scanner software. I think you can get a free trial period online and it should also work. You'll have to pay for that if you like it.
