Hi there. Yes, if you can see a very faint image on the screen that indicates that the inverter or inverter coil has become defective and needs looking at or replacing.
It still could be the inverter or the lamp (CCFL). Even with a meter, you must likely won't know for sure. Plus it can have 1800v there at times. So that is pretty high. Sorry I don't have better news for you.
If it showed a pinkish tint on the screen before it went out it could be the backlite. If you can see a faint screen when you turn the room lights out it chuld be the inverter. Inverters are cheap ... a used one for around $8 on ebay. Try that first. Make sure that you buy the EXACT model that is presently in your laptop.
