The PDF, or portable document format, file bridges the gaps between many software programs. Someone using one program to create a file need not worry that his intended recipient have that same program, because PDFs just require a free software program to open. On occasion, it may seem like a PDF is just as hard to open as a native file created in that proprietary software, but one of a variety of factors may contribute to the unreadability problem.

Software
One of the most common reasons a PDF is unreadable -- and the easiest to fix -- is that the person trying to open the PDF doesn't have the software to do so. To open a PDF requires the free downloadable program Reader, created and distributed by Adobe, which also makes the PDF-creation software Acrobat. A person who doesn't have Reader installed won't see the familiar red-and-black PDF icon; they'll see a white box symbolizing that the computer doesn't know how to read the file. b> Zoom b> Although it seems quite obvious, a person's screen resolution may have everything to do with why a PDF appears unreadable. Since PDFs are often scans or saved files of standard 8.5-by-11-inch paper, small fonts and occasionally handwriting can get be scaled to tiny dimensions when the sheet is viewed full . Zoomed out, a heavily typed or scrawled PDF may appear as a bunch of jumbled black dots and lines instead of the clear text it would be when zoomed in. Conversion b> Even if you have the Reader software installed, trying to open a PDF in a program that doesn't allow it will cause problems. For example, the Reader software doesn't let you edit a PDF -- you need Acrobat for that -- but you can still use other programs to do things such as redacting, or making black lines to obscure information. You can open a PDF in a program such as Adobe Photoshop and have the PDF be completely readable. On the other hand, if you try to open a PDF in Windows Paint, the operating system's native graphics tool, it will be unreadable because Paint does not accept PDF files. b> Missing Elements b> Something that appears perfectly readable on one person's screen may look entirely unreadable on another, solely because of what's missing from the file. In some cases, a PDF that looks jumbled is a result of missing fonts. While it may seem simple to just create a PDF from whatever document you're working on, if the person who receives your PDF doesn't have those fonts installed, the PDF may be unreadable. You can combat this one of two ways -- try to use universal fonts, such as Helvetica; or take the extra steps to embed the fonts into the PDF. This requires use of Distiller, also an Adobe product. An unreadable PDF may also be missing the password or certificate to render the document readable. Contact the person who created the PDF to inquire whether he locked it with an encryption. Encryption is removable with a key or password. Hope this helps.

I figured out the problem after reading your answer. I used macs for 5 years, and expected to be able to read a pdf simply by clicking on it, This PC is my first in a decade and i'm rather embarassed to admit that i simply didn't open adobe reader. tank youu for reminding me.

SOURCE: How do I load Adobe Reader 9 download to read a

Dont bother with Adobe reader it's a bloated load of rubbish that will eat up 75mb's of space on your harddrive and be forever phoning home to Adobe looking for updates.
If all you want to do is view pdf files go to downloads.com and search for Foxit reader. Foxit reader is a simple perfect pdf reader that only takes up about 8mb's of space on your harddrive. If during the install you select "custom install" you can uncheck the "ask tool bar" and "make ask my home page" and then at the end you can uncheck the "put a desktop shortcut to Ebay on my desktop"
I have been using Foxit reader for years and I install it on all my customers machines.

SOURCE: Every time I scan a multiple-page document into a

There is no easy way of doing this.
What you can do is scan each page as an image file, then use an OCR program to convert each page into a text file and save them. Then open a fresh/new Word document, then open each text file page and copy and paste each text file page into this Word document.
After you have copied all the pages into this Word document, then spell check it, edit and format the text then save the document. You can then create a PDF file from this Word document if you need to.

How do I name and save a scanned document in HP C4480 (Windows)?

Hello, Robert -

I hope I am correct in assuming you have the user's manual for the HP Photosmart C4480. Just in case you do not, this is the link to the web page where you can download and save the manual (PDF format - Adobe Acrobat Reader software needed, free):
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-photosmart-c4400-all-in-one-printer-series/3655558/model/3655559/manuals

After downloading the PDF document save it (Save As) to your Documents folder and give it a name you can find again easily - maybe: HP Photosmart C4480 Manual.

How to save a PDF file:
- With your computer, open the PDF document in Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Move cursor to upper left corner of page and left click or tap on FILE
- In drop down File menu, move cursor to SAVE AS and left click or tap on it
- In Save As window which opens, move cursor down to CHOOSE A DIFFERENT FOLDER and left click on tap on that "button"
- In window which opens choose DOCUMENTS in the Documents Library
- In File name box near the bottom of the Documents Library pop-up window, enter the name with which you want to save the PDF document, Example: HP Photosmart C4480 Manual
- Left click or tap on the SAVE button

Note: The steps above will be similar to what you will need to do after scanning any document.

The instructions for scanning start in Chapter 10, Page 64 (Image 304 of the PDF format manual).

Open the scanner through your computer. It is easier to save the document later by operating the scan functions through your computer.

With the scan application open on your computer run the scan process. After scanning the document, you will need to save it. First, you will need to determine the format in which you want to save the scanned document: PDF, JPEG (photo image), GIF, etc.

After choosing the format for the scanned document, in the proper file name box, enter the name for the document you wish to save.
Examples:
Correspondence 2018-Feb-18 Brother
Photo Brothers-Family 2018-Feb-18
Deed of Sale 2018-Feb-18 House

Get the idea? I like to give a date to my scanned document names to help identify them better.

Once you have entered the file name, click or tap on the SAVE button.

Note: I always like to open the saved document from the Documents folder to verify it was saved. Plus, my scanner attaches a number at the end of every file name. After closing out the saved document and closing the scanner winder, I go back and Edit the file name, removing the added number (digits) from the saved file name.

The video you will find with this link:
http://esvideo.es/video/watch/ult2ORqN1eGRiLQ=
is for those who use Windows 8 or 10. Even if you use another Windows operating system (I use Windows 7), you can probably figure out what to do. The video goes through the scanning and saving process step-by-step.

Best wishes.

Lexmark X7350 Scan feature

well you are able to scan multiple documents.. but the file size is more.. the way lexmark software writes the pdf file.. the file will be huge for PDF... but not sure if this is a case with any other all in one manufacturer like HP also... but i would assume it would be the same.. so scan the file to MS WORD or any other application that supports multiple pages... so u have it as one file... but if u want only pdf files, then u have to do a little work around like writing the MS WORD Document to pdf format. If the PDF Writer is not installed with your copy of MSWORD then try any free pdf writer software available on the internet.
