I have a Kenmore Electric Range Model 790. I have a problem with the locking mechanism for the self cleaning oven. It appears that after I selected to clean the oven, the oven door was opened while the lock light was flashing. After this the lock light continues to flash and the lock is extended. It will not retract and the door remains open and won't close now as the locking hook is not allowing the oven door to close. I have tried turning off the power and pressing the stop/clear button without success. The owner's manual does not address what to do if this situation occurs.
My Kenmore self cleaning electric range, Model No.665.95781 is in self cleaning mode, and now it will not open.

The very first time I used my Kenmore electric range oven, the door has remained more than an inch open and just refuses to close. I am sure it has cost me a lot in excess electric bills. What can I do?

Quoting from the link shown:
Step 1
Read the display on the electronic oven controls, where the clock and timer normally appear. If the display reads "CLN" while the "Door Locked" light is on, the Kenmore range is in self-clean mode. When the Kenmore range is in self-clean mode, you must stop the cleaning process before the door will unlock.
Step 2
Stop the self-cleaning process by pressing and holding the "Stop/Clear" button for three seconds. The oven lock should disengage after three seconds. In some cases, a malfunction between the control panel and the locking mechanism prevents the door from unlocking.
Step 3
Hold the light switch for several seconds if the "Stop/Clear" button fails to unlock the range door. Engaging the light switch for several seconds resets the entire locking mechanism and overrides the "Stop/Clear" button.
First, unplug the oven, or turn off the circuit breaker to it - so long as power is cut to the oven. Leave it for about 5 minutes, then plug it back in or turn the circuit breaker back on and try to open the door.
If that doesn't work, turn on the self-cleaning cycle again, and let it run for about 15 minutes. Then turn it off and wait another 15 minutes, and see if the door will open.
If neither of those work, you have a more serious problem with the locking mechanism. Either a bad solenoid or a damaged heat locking mechanism. Both of these will require removing the stove top to access and repair. Let me know if the above suggestions fix the problem. If they don't, I will get you more specifics on repairing the locking mechanism - assuming you're up for that.

Hi, When door locks, This is when oven is in self clean mode. After the heat has cooled down the door should release again. If this does not work try turning the power off to the stove (breaker) This should reset the stove to normal. Call a repair man if this continues. Good luck.
The problem lies within your oven control board. This is very common and are not very hard to replace but they are expensive. You can check the price of a new control board at sears parts.
I had the same problem. Open the oven door. Press and hold the light switch. You will hear the door lock move back into the correct position. Hope this fixes your problem. This has happened to me twice and holding the light switch always works.
Press the self-clean button. The panel becomes blank(---), then press the up arrow( ^ ). The panel will appear 3:00 (indication for the duration of self-cleaning). The oven will lock on its own and start the self-cleaning. Good luck, ya'll!
