I got it unfroze by "resetting" it... and now i cant remember the combo to do so. it was something to the effect of turning the hold on and off, then holding the center button and the power button until it shuts off.

Try going in itunes, right clicking on the song, and click create AAC version. The song may be in the wrong format which is why it won't finish playing it. Hope this helps!
Try doing this: Toggle the hold switch and put it back in the off position. Then press and hold the center button and the menu button simultaneously for ten seconds and the apple symbol should come up on the screen. Then it should work like normal. Hope this helps!
Toggle the hold switch.
Press and hold the Play and Menu buttons simultaneously for about 10 seconds. This will restart the iPod OS. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320 for more.
1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons
until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to
repeat this step.
Tip:
If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set
it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button
is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you
are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and
not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting
iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical
outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is
turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
Zen V is dead "If your Zen V is dead, wont respond to anything, try this, plug it in to the computer, hold the power switch in the on position, THEN trigger the reset button, worked like a charm for mine, I had thought it a lost cause."
if that doesnt work try How to reset Zen v + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22T_gkkZjmM&feature=related
IF the other solution doesnt work, you can try putting it into Recovery Mode, just to unfreeze it.
- Turn the device off (hold power for 20 seconds) - Slide the hold switch into "hold" position. - Press and hold the "record" button for a few seconds.
If you see Welcome to Recovery Mode, let go of the Record button and hold the power button to shut it off. Then restart it.
