My DC18 has suction when it is unlatched like to do floors with the roller attachment. However when I lock it upright to use the hose it loses suction totally. I have cleaned the filter as well as removed the hose for obstructions. When latched upright it makes a totally different noise than when unlatched. After a few seconds in the upright position it makes a noise that I can only describe as if you were to put your hand over the hose when it was working properly.

SOURCE: no suction in the hose
see my answer to the "suction out of the handle but not to the floor" this will answer it.
SOURCE: losing suction in upright position
It's probably your belt. It could be broken or stretched. If broken or stretched, the roller won't spin very well, if at all. Another possibility is that there may be debris blocking suction near the roller. Hope this helps.
SOURCE: my DC17 suction hose doesn't have any suction occasionally.
check the seal on the filter is not broken,And check for any blockage at the bottom of the pickup pipe.
SOURCE: my dyson dc17 animal will pick up via the hose
Hi its Darran at Dyson.
Check that the brush control dial is in the centre position when upright and then moves forward when the head is released. If the brush bar is still not spinning when switched on in the vacuuming position, check the base for blockages and remove any threads or hairs from the brush bar as outlined in your user guide or on our website.
If you are still having difficulties, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).
Kind regards
Darran
