When I turned my set on, it started with a cog looking symbol and then acted like it was downloading something. After a bit, a red X appeared and stays on the screen. I am connected to AT&T wireless cable system and another tv in house works fine. Any help will be appreciated.

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

You may well have either poor contact on the tube base of the colour that is missing or a poor contact in the tube itself. The latter is not repairable.

Your set surely has some kind of audio output in the rear if not under a front panel.
It could be in several different forms; very common is a left/right set of (RCA type) jacks color coded red (right) and white (left).
It could also be a 'Line out' jack that supplies a standardized level for use with an external audio system; this one is probably the best choice for your useage.
You may have to buy an adaptor cable to connect the two devices.

It sound to me like a defective light engine. If so this is a very expensive repair if you set not under warranty or a service contract. This could have been damaged by a power surge.

our hitachi did the same thing. It cost us 300.00 to tell us that there were two bad solder joints and they caused a power surge or something.
