New drives have to be readied for use. Try Start > Run (aka Search in Win 7) type dskmgmt.msc. Look for your drive there. It should be without a drive letter. Right clicking will give you the options of initializing, creating disc partitions, assigning logical drives, and formatting. If this seems a little daunting, a wizard should load. If not there is refresh icon on the toolbar if you select the drive. You may have to break down the 3TB down to a few partition because of the large size. Windows has a 2TB limit on MBR formatted HD's.

Hi I have a 3tb ext harddrive - the led is flashing and my computer won't read the drive files

A single MBR physical drive is limited to 2TB in Windows. This is a common setup. You will need to break down and partition the drive in order to use it.

Expansion external drive

New drives have to be readied by the OS. They must be formatted and in your case partitioned. There is a 2TB limit in Windows. Right click My Computer and Manage. Go to Disc Management and use the wizard or mnaul setup. Hightlight the new drive and click the refresh button at top. if the wizrd does not auto play.
