Vertical lines in my laptop screen BEWARE SPAM NUMBER +1-800-532-4187 BELOW

Hello! I've been using my Compaq Presario (M2223AP) Laptop for 2 years now, then all of a sudden I saw 2 vertical lines on the screen. 1 line is a clear red line (but not so thick & dark) located about 1/3 from the left of the screen while the other is a very faint (thin, almost transparent) line located about 1/5 from the right of the screen. I think it might be a monitor problem. I'm not very good in fixing computers so I have not done anything about it yet. I'd appreciate your help very much. Thanks!

  • Reylaz Jan 03, 2008

Hi. I have a Compaq Presario M2000. My problem is more or less the same as that posted by Qdoublea. First to appear were 2 thin, red dashed lines about 1/4 inch apart, located approximately in the the middle of my laptop screen. That was about 3 weks ago. Then, about a week after that, 2 thin, dashed lines about 1/4 inch apart again appeared (one blue, the other green), located at about quarter of the way from the left side of the screen. About another week after that, one thin, dashed green line appeared close to the last two lines. A day after that, one more solid red line appeared next to the last green line.

I hooked up a VGA monitor as suggested by 24 seven and the lines didn't show there. Then, I tried twisting my laptop's screen as suggested by tomj23 but nothing happened. How do I resolve this problem?

    Thanks in advance.

Just try and punch your screen from the side and see if it goes away? or try and pies the hinges of the screen where it joins with the body. if it works it's probably just something lose in the connections that needs to be reattached. If not you probably will have to change the screen.

A VGA monitor is a monitor that uses a standard VGA connector to attach to your PC/laptop. A VGA connector is a small D shaped socket connector, about ½ inch long and ¼ inch wide. Its usually blue with three rows of holes (total of 15 holes) where pins from the mating connector match up with. The only other thing that may look like it is a serial port but that is easy to distinguish, it has two rows of pins for a total of 9. What 24 sever is suggesting you do is connect another monitor to see if the problem shows up there as well. I?ll be surprised if it does since usually this type of display problem on a laptop more often than not is due to a defective connection inside the laptop screen area. A quick test and perhaps even fix would be to grasp the right and left sides of your display while it is on (displaying the offensive lines) and gently twist like you were wringing out a towel. Again, and I emphasize, gently using only a couple of ounces of force. Watch to see if the lines disappear, get worse of make the screen flash or change. If you do then its likely cause is the connector from the LCD panel to the electronics has oxidation or a loose connection. If you?re lucky the flexing might even fix your problem, if not you will have to take it apart to find out exactly what is going on or take it to your local repair shop.

A bad fcc or connector /connection on the screen its almost
because of heating up by direct sunlight or blocked airiation by build up overheating by shrinkage of the contact terminals

The solution is quite simple and easy. I know because I has this problem as well. You start with a fifth of gin. Drink it all first. Then curse at the screen repeatedly for 2 1/2 hours. Next run a hot bath. Pour in 3 cans of Diet Dr Pepper. Let the laptop soak in this bath for 1 hour. Remove the laptop and begin cursing at it again for 15 full minutes. Now, go get these items: 1 saw, 2 daggers, and 4 pistols. Take the saw and saw off the outer corners of the screen approx. 1 inch deep. Now use both daggers to stab the laptop (at the same time) 6 times. Now shoot the laptop twice with each of the pistols. Problem solved!! Works like a charm!!!!!!! <!-- from fixya rte -->

Hey. Exact same problem in my sister-in-laws dell inspiron, Slim lines running vertically through the screen, which changed and some times disappeared as you pushed or pulled on the edges of the screen.
It is easily fixed, and I'm not even going to make you download some shareware to find out if you can fix it for $19.95.
They are there at boot, so figured not driver problems. Took the screen apart, and it wasn't a loose hookup or wire.
Behind a thin plastic sheet (think saran wrap) marked with DO NOT TOUCH, were several components lying on a regular circuit board. I decided I was smarter than the people who put it there and pulled it off (much of the film was painted solid white, so I couldn't really see what was going on behind there...). After monkeying around for awhile, I noticed that there were two 10 or 12 thin elongated components that, when pressed against, gave and changed the lines indicated, just below where I was pressing.
A little unorhodox, but my solution: the parts were being pushed together (no, I never took the time to actually check what exactly the funciton of these parts were...if but if you look you will know what I mean..) by the two faces of plastic holding the screen in. Don't laugh...I cut two q-tip ends off so the cotton was gone...placed them along side the long skinny circuit components so the pressure was transferred off the component and onto the back of the laptop cover, and done. It took the pressure off whatever was squeezing the two parts together that shouldnt have been together, and that was it. Everything still fits back together just like new, and I can squezze, push, pull the area around the screen with absolutely no problem. Like I said, a little unorthadox, but it works. I'm a genius. Feel free to send donations. oognok.com

The reason this happens is because the graphics card is either loose burned out or jsut needs to be cleaned... to clean it use a pencil rubber in the gold tips that connect it, blow on the card to remove any dust build ups and reconnect the graphics card when done (make sure its clipped in properly).... different brands of computers will do different things such as the different coloured lines and screens flashing red. My dell latitude 630 had green and blue verticle lines. Just follow what i said and it should be fine.

Carrying on from other fantastic solutions described so far.

I closed my laptop and then initially pressed it around the area of the lines. I then jumped on it a few times, then dropped a brick on it a few times.

After this I reversed my car over it and finally threw it off a cliff.

I must admit that after retrieving it I can confirm that there's not a single line on the screen.

I know, a rather time and energy consuming solution, but if you can't find a better answer then give it a try.

Anyone know the best glue for sticking a laptop back together with?

I got home from PC world earlier with a new laptop which had a very dark green line vertically on the left. Took it back and they told me

"its a problem with the driver software which is not covered by their guarantee"

So £800 for a nackered screan.

Its a monitor problem that has to do with physical abuse of the screen or overheating.... Don't let some ******* tell you its your graphics card. It's a line fault which is a problem with the edge connector. Take it to anyone that repairs computers and tell them that and they will buy you a new screen or you could just do it yourself, make sure you get the correct screen though haha

I had green scan lines instead of black and pink instead of white - after reading this forum, I gently pressed on the top of the lid with the laptop closed with my palms, and then opened it and the lines where gone. Must have been a loose connection behind the screen like some of you suggested. thanks guys, I hope this works for other people. I'm just glad I don't have to fork out for a new LCD :p

Well, it's either that your screen is dying, in which case you should either get a new screen, or a new computer. Or, it could be your video card, in which case you need a new video card.
You can tell if it's your video card if you hook you laptop up to an external monitor and the lines are still there. If they aren't, then your screen is dying, so the only fix I know of is to get a new screen.

Hey it's PK here, my friend had this same problem with a blue/aqua line appearing right down his laptop screen I fixed it for him.
Basicly you need to press lightly on the top and bottom parts of the lines together and after a few tries the line will vanish, I don't know if this is a universal fix or a temp fixed but it certainly worked in my case and has not reappeared, so if you got no other option may aswell try it for yourselves aswell :)

While it was on bed my 2yr old daughter jumped on it and since then i had them vertical lines (green on black background and pink on white background) ten rows of eight lines tightly squeezed and equally apart.

i tried connecting it to my tv using HDMI lead but it wasnt sending any signals. pressed ctrl + F7 selected monitor, still no signal.

could it be internal fault rather then the screen?

or may be the video cards gone faulty?

I had the same issue with a Toshiba A505-S6980 laptop. It's most often the connection terminals/wiring etc. However in some cases it could be the lcd itself in which case I just ordered a new one from laptop replacement screen.

Found possible solution to this problem. CC FL Inverter is seriously damage or faulty. Buy a new one compatible to your laptop and install it manually. They told me it is easy if you got tools with you. CC FL inverter found in the sides of the screens,.

I was having a flashing vertical line right through the middle of the screen. I tried everything from re-installing my OS to downloading new drivers.

I read from someone to press on the screen. I have a Dell XPS M1330 notebook. I pressed the screen (directly over the lines) in a few places and just like that the lines are gone.

Who knew!

Vertical lines on LCD/LED screens is nearly always damage to the fine connections at the top of the screen, same with solid horizontal lines, except its the side of the LCD (sometimes the horizontal lines only go from the edge to the midpoint of the screen). The only way to repair it is to install a replacement LCD screen of the same type.

If the issue isn't a solid line, but dots or dashes, invariably in some form of pattern, this points to a faulty GPU chip, or GPU memory. In this case, with nearly all laptops, it means a replacement main board, which is expensive. A small number of laptops have the GPU as an add on board, in which case only the GPU board needs replaced.

Software and drivers can be an issue, but usually show up as blue screens or random blocks all over the screen, along with a crash.. Faults as described here are usually hardware faults with the LCD itself or the GPU.

I hope that helps.

i had this problem last week, on most laptops the connection ribbon that connects the screen to the motherboard often runs over the cpu, genius design there :). Solution is get yourself a replacement cable and change them over, its got nothing to do with drivers and for gods sake dont go pressing on the screen unless you want to f

I've just had the same problem, my solution was simple, I compressed the frame of my laptop screen, just above the exact location of the vertical line while the monitor was on. I only used my thumb and middle finger and I didn't compress very hard, it worked instantly, just like magic

I have a dell inspiron 600, and have a vertical line showing in the screen also, but it will not go away by tapping at the line or pressing it with your finger, i already got a new hard drive, does anyone know what could be wrong with it, thanks.

SOURCE: Vertical lines in my laptop screen

I know not everyone has this ability, but if you can, go to a friend's house and hook up an external monitor to your laptop. You may need to use the function keys to switch from LCD to external, but if the lines go away on the external, you have a bad LCD. If the line shows up still on the external, then your problem is either:

a) video driver (free, easy fix)
b) bad inverter (video 'outputter') ...approximately $10-50/varies + labor costs to replace
c) bad video card/motherboard ...usually between $200-$400 + labor to replace

Hope this helps - please be sure to rate my answer :)

Try connecting an external monitor to the Dell Inspiron 9300 and see if the vertical line is also present on the monitor. If the monitor display is fine, then your laptop’s LCD display panel is defective. If the monitor also displays the vertical line, then your problem is with either the video card or motherboard located inside your laptop.
Not sure if the Compaq Presario has an external monitor plug, but if it does the above procedure can be applied to that one as well.

Sorry, but I find these sites difficult to figure out - I'm not a chat room person. I just wanted to thank dg9dotorg for the comments and whenever I finally find out the cause and get it repaired next year, I will advise what caused it. edierosa

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

Have you tried hooking it up to an external monitor?
This would ensure that it's the screen and not the video card..
If you do that and you receive a good picture then it could be something as simple as a loose video cable. Or it could also mean something like a bad video card or the expensive one, a bad screen.

if this line is there during boot up then it is a monitor problem usually. but if it is not then it is a problem with your windows files. you could try reinstalling your windows from the disks you were given with it? otherwise i will look into it. email me if you need more help. [email protected]

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

My understanding is that you have 2 laptops with the same problem, if that is the case, you need to replace the lcd. When you have lines on lcd's, that is a sign of a bad lcd.

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

Yes the problem is with your video system hardware, most likely. A repair may be possible as it could be the delicate ribbon cable that provides the video signal from a connection on the motherboard to the actual display screen. It could be the display screen. If some tech-savy friend with a good rep and an anti-static mat, good tools, and good lighting wants to assist you or check it for you, you may give that a try. Consider first that if you have or can get an extended warranty from the manufacturer then you can have a higher likelihood of a good resolution of the problem of the vertical lines that distract from viewing the display.

Vertical lines in my laptop screen

There can be 3 possible reasons for this
1)Screen connector cable is loose. You can try to re-seat it and see if works.
2)display card problem. Connect your laptop to an external monitor and see if the problem persists. If it does not then
3)You will need to get a replacement LCD screen.
Hope this helps!
