the message 'searching for base' comes every time i pick up the handset as a result i cannot dial out

I have the exact same problem. I've had the phones about 1 1/2 years, now they're always dropping calls and are very unreliable. It's the pits because I first thought the phones were very cool and was willing to pay a bit more for the features.

have the same problem. can't find base as result can't dial out. How do you fix this problem?

  • CorCentDad Mar 18, 2008

I have the same problem, I've had the base plus 4 phones for about a
year and a half. Unreliable, searches for base, drops calls. I
originally loved this phone. I have a wireless network and have turned
it off to rule that out as the problem...still, same problem. Has
    anyone tried replacing the battery?

I'm thinking about buying (after trying to see if Vtech will send some
for free first) more batteries but would like to know if anyone else
has had any luck with a new battery yet.

I have the same problem. Unreliable, searches for base, drops calls. I really like this phone as well. Did
anyone try replacing the battery? If so, did it work? I thought it might. thanks....

I have had this problem before with this V tech phone. It keeps saying it cannot find base then it drops the call. I called customer service and they went through some steps to troubleshoot over the phone but nothing worked. They had me mail my one phone and base to them in the original packaging and receipt and they sent me a refurbished one. It was a big hassle and I would never buy these phones again.

I only had the phone about 8 months. Now I have owned the phone for 1 1/2 years and I am having the same problem again. Ugghh. I need to run my business not worry about phone problems.

My system has worked great for about two years. Suddenly I wake up to all my phones beeping every 30 seconds or so. I checked the base unit and it has power and finds everything ( the remotes beep) then the whole base unit goes dead like the power plug was pulled and the the remotes beep again that they have lost the base. I was hoping that the transformer was intermittent and i was going to swap it out with one of the remote bases, but... they operate on 9VDC and the base uses 7VDC.... I'm trying to get a 7VDC to test otherwise it loks like its time to pay for another base. BTW I opened up the base unit to check the battery and it never had one. I'm sure it's not the problem, but were they supposed to come with a battery? there was not one in the box when I bought it.. Another Best Buy missing parts purchase [[[sigh]]]

Had the same problem and replaced the battery. budgetbatteries.com had the cheapest ones. But it's a knockoff, so I don't know how long it will last. So far it's been 3 months and the problems are gone. I would try that first and see how it goes. I paid about $15 including shipping. If you buy it from vtech it's at least double...

After replacing the batteries in all 4 of my units and the base, I have eliminated the dropped calls and searching for base issues.... for now. Even though these batteries are supposed to last more than 2 years, the fact that they are constantly being recharged when the remotes are in their cradles is a life shortening practice. The more you charge a rechargeable battery the faster they will fail. As an electronic designer I would suggest to V-tech that the cradles only charge the battery when it is almost dead but this, of course, would be more electronics in the cradles and more money for the units. The best solution is buying batteries as needed, several at a time online to avoid the high brick and mortar store prices.

Tried the same - battery solution.. my phone is 1.2 years old. DO NOT BUY A VTECH PHONE - they look nice, but they are JUNK! And the speakerphone sucks.

I've tried everything to fix this. These phones last two years max. The only resolution I've found is buying a new phone system. I'll never, ever buy a vtech again.

There is no solution! This phone is a lemon and even the VTech customer support admitted as much, stating that the batteries are underpowered for the phone and basically expire in one year. So if you want to keep your phone, you'll be forced to either replace the battery each year (I have 8 handsets, gets pricey!!!) or walk away from a considerable investment after only one or at most two years of use - painful......

It is my understanding that lemon laws apply to all consumer products. Hiding behind their 12 months warranty is the wrong tack for this company to take. Some clever lawyer will come up with a class-action suit.

I have two handsets, one of them recently starting dropping the connection to the base quite regularly [even if it was just inches away], and I ended-up in the same situation after unregistering the phone.

In my case, I was able to remove the battery from the phone [as you did] but also unplug the power on the base unit for several seconds. After restoring power to both, I was able to re-register the handset and it appears to be working more reliably now.

Handset says searching

Searching means its searching for a signal. If the phone cant contact the base it will say searching. Make sure the handset is in range of the base and the base is connected to the power.

Problem with att cordless phone wont ring

First, check the wirings (power cord and phone cord). Are they properly plugged in to their outlets (power outlet and phone jack, respectively)? Have you tried plugging in another phone? Does it ring? If yes, it could be your phone system, if not, let's try this troubleshooting steps. This is one of the basic troubleshooting steps for cordless phones. Unplug the battery from the phone/s, unplug the power plug from the main base unit. Wait for 10-15 seconds and plug everything back in. First the batteries then the power plug.

One of my cordless phones says not registered. How do I fix that? Also, another phone says check battery. Where can I get another battery? Warranty?

Put the non-registered handset in the master base unit. Unplug the base unit for about 10 seconds and plug it back in. Wait for a message to change on the handset and press and hold the handset locator button for 4 seconds. This will re-register the handset. Do not remove the handset from the base while performing the above steps. Good Luck!

How do i reset my cordless phone after a power outage

Most cordless phones can be simply reset by taking it out of the base and removing the battery. Put it back in after a minute. Note that you may lose your contacts on your phone when you reset it using this procedure.

To fix this issue:

4. Wait 10-15 minutes… and put back together in Reverse Order
5. Connect the Handset Battery

Our Panasonic system shows "No link to base walk closer" for any of the handsets even when 2 inches from the base. Seems the base has stopped communicating.

Often times when this happens try putting the phone back in the base unplug from the wall for about 30 seconds plug back in wait about a minute then try again. I have seen where you may need to also try unplugging the battery from the phone for a minute put it back in and place in the base. Its a communication problem with the phone to base connections and resetting the power often clears this up.
Hope this helps!

"no link to base" error message

Sounds like the antenna is not working, and signal is not getting to the cordless sets.

Try unplugging your base station (unplug everything; power and phone cable - the basestation were all the cords are plugged into) and leave it unplugged, pull out all the batteries in the phones, and then start by putting all the batteries back into the phones.

Once the phones are back and powered up, plug in the base station again, and see if that helps.
All this is doing is re-setting the phones and base station and forcing them to re-link to each other.

I hope this helps.

Just bought an additional handset for GE 27951 expandable 6.0 DECT Cordless. I press and hold the Page button for 5 seconds but the new handset will not register. Error keeps occurring "no base."

This exact thing happened to me. Same model number. No matter what I did, the new handsets would not register.

The solution? Reset the entire system:
1. On the BASE - Unplug from wall both power and phone line. Unplug battery from base handset.
2. ON the Extension phone - unplug from wall and unplug battery from handset.
3. Wait AT LEAST 5 minutes.
4. Plug back in BASE power.
5. Plug back in BASE phone line.
6. Plug back in EXTENSION handset battery. Don't plug in BASE handset yet.
7. Follow steps to program EXTENSION. When successful:
8. Plug back in BASE handset battery.

Cordless phones will not connect to base.

I just had the same problem and tried several things with no results. Then, I figured I had tried everything else so I just unplugged the battery pack, set the phone down for 25 minutes and then plugged the pack back in. Phone worked again after that.
