Laptop battery problems are quite common among owners of all brands of notebooks. On average, laptop batteries last one to three years. Their exact lifespan depends on several factors, such as how much you use the batteries, the number of charge-discharge cycles and the quality of the batteries. Lithium-ion batteries begin to lose the ability to hold a charge over time. Before you replace a laptop battery, consider that there may be other reasons that the laptop is not working properly. You may be able to recharge the battery instead.

1.Determine if the laptop battery is defective. While less than 1 percent of batteries are defective, the possibility is still there. If the battery is new and only charges some of the way, it may just require a BIOS update to charge fully. New batteries that refuse to charge at all may be defective. Purchase a new laptop battery to replace the defective one.

2. Test the laptop power adapter to see if it's faulty. Run the laptop directly from the laptop power adapter and without the battery. If the laptop does not work with the adapter plugged in, the adapter is dead and you will need to replace it. The laptop battery may refuse to charge if the adapter is faulty. Charge the battery with the laptop turned off.

3. Insert the laptop battery into another laptop to test it. If the laptop battery charges in another laptop, the laptop's motherboard may be bad. Replacing a motherboard in a computer can be very expensive. If the cost to fix the computer is not worth the cost of replacing the motherboard, consider purchasing a new laptop.

4. Reinstall the battery to ensure all connectors latch properly. The latch mechanism that holds the laptop battery should click into place. If the latch does not close, remove the battery and examine the compartment for signs of damage.

5. Troubleshoot the BIOS to determine if there is a hardware problem. Turn on the laptop and immediately enter BIOS setup by holding down the "Del" and "F1" or "F2" keys, depending on the make and model of the laptop. When the BIOS screen appears, see how long it takes for the battery to charge down. If the battery does not last as long as the BIOS setup, a hardware failure may be the problem.I hope you find it very helpful. Best regards.

Hello.

The most common reasons for power issues are the battery, power jack and power adapter/cord.

Power off and remove the battery. If the laptop powers on with just the adapter connected, your battery is faulty.

If you move/wiggle the power adapter at the point where it connects to the laptop, and the power goes off and on, the power jack is the problem.

The power jack is inside the laptop and either needs soldering or replacement. If a power jack problem, it should be addressed by someone knowledgeable.

If no change, the power adapter is probably faulty and needs replacement.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: My laptop won't charge. I have

For a test -Remove the battery from the laptop. (leave it out) -Plug in the adapter and turn the laptop on. -Gently wiggle the adapter plugged in

If the computer powers off the solder and/or pins have broken loose from the DC jack. This is very common. Average repair bill is around $150, if your in the Denver Colorado Area I can do the repair for about $50
If it won't turn on while you wiggle the adapter and hit the power button then the adapter is bad again sadly

SOURCE: Netbook charging indicator light won't light

Hello,
If the battery won't charge and the laptop won't turn on but the ac adapter works with other laptops, then the problem is the port where you plugin the ac adapter. Some of the laptops has it built in to the motherboard. So you might need to have it repaired by a technician. Or if the laptop is still in warranty, you might need to send it to the manufacturer to have it repaired or replaced. But if the laptop works without the battery, or it will turn on but the battery indicator is not lighting up, you're facing one of these problems.
1. The battery itself is dead. 2. the battery bay is loose 3. the battery itself is loose
Hope this helps...

SOURCE: Gateway laptop Model No. NEW95 won't charge

If the main battery is not charging properly and you state the charger and battery are fine, then there is only one possibility, the charge circuits on the motherboard are defective, this is a very rare situation and I have seen it once in all the years of service, make sure the battery is not the problem because in most cases it is.

POWER SUPPLY & BATTERY PROBLEM
If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced. Rechargeable batteries will fail if stored in a discharged state for long periods.

I reinstalled XP on IBM T41, now battery won't charge. Could this be Driver Problem

Sounds like you need a new battery.
It's not just a battery in a case, it also has a small circuit board inside to control the charging etc, if that's faulty it won't charge, or if it has dead cells in it won't charge.
