The dryer will not stay running.

I have to hold the switch in the on position until it shuts down. You have to do this at least 8 times before the dryer will stay running.

When you hold the start switch you are energizing the start winding of the motor. If the motor does not take off and run, the most likely cause is the centrifugal switch inside the dryer's motor is not being switched. It is switched by a spring loaded collar on the motor shaft which moves when the motor starts to run, and again back when it stops. Often times this collar begins to stick on older dryers. Sometimes you can free it up by cleaning the dryer motor with an air compressor and hitting the collar with some spray lube. This only works some times. The only sure fix is to replace the motor, which unfortunately is rather expensive and a fair amount of work. Please don't bother rating this, as anything but a Fix-Ya lowers my score.

Dryer won't stay running without holding down the start button

It may be the centrifugal switch on the motor. The push button starts the motor and as the motor spins up to speed the centrifugal switch closes to keep the motor running. Hope this helps.

There is a switch on the motor that is active when the motor gets to speed. Either the switch is bad or the motor is not getting up to proper speed.

Dryer won't stay on

The motor centrifugal switch is not switching from the start winding to the run winding. The switch should stay in the run winding when the motor picks up speed unless power to the motor is interrupted or cut off. The switch is replaceable on most dryer models but sometimes it is an integral or built-in part of the dryer motor and failure of the switch requires the replacement of the motor. Indicate the exact model number of the dryer for more accurate troubleshooting and repair advice.

Hello, My GE Dryer, Model M460-G timer won't shut off

Sounds like you have a faulty timer switch, check with your local supply house and get the same type of switch.
When you go to replace the timer switch, unplug the dryer, then remove one wire at a time. This will prevent wiring mix-ups.
Good luck,
I hope this helps

Clothes dryer is overheating and then shuts off

Your vent pipe is probably clogged with lint. Clean out, and blow out, if possible, If the vent is clogged, the air cannot properly escape and all that heat stays in the dryer, which probably sets off some kind of themal protection switch, preventing the dryer from running until it cools down.

Dryer won't stay on when button is pushed the button has to be held down for the dryer to run

A centrifugal switch has failed within the dryer. The centrifugal switch maintains electrical flow to the motor after the start button has been released (this is a safety measure) When you press the start button you put power directly to the motor; once started the centrifugal switch then puts power to the motor until the time then shuts it down.
I hope this may have helped you,

Strange. Heaters usually shut down with the spinning drum when door is open. If you check the schematic for unit you can check to see if in fact this is correct operation. Attached site usually has schematics for appliances. You might want to check. Search Over 2 1 Million Appliance Parts

replace the motor, as you are holding in the start button you are making the dryer run in the start winding of the motor, it is designed to only stay in this winding untill the centrifigual switch on the motor automaticaily switches it to the run winding, when the motor switch knows that it is using the run winding it closes the motor switch contact for the heater to come on, replace the motor
