That may be because he does not have his radar unit activated. Radar units work by sending out a microwave signal. It bounces off your car and back to the unit. It then calculates the whole distance over time thing and figures out your speed...it's more complicated than that, but I don't feel like giving a class...and I'm not a real genius anyway when it comes to physics and whatever other -ics are involved with the science of radar. Point is...radar units have a hold function..kinda like turning that microwave beam on and off...when the officer has the radar on "hold" there is no beam coming out..which means, there is nothing for your radar detector to detect. When he takes it off hold to clock your speed, the magic beam shoots out, bounces off your car, and returns to the unit..then tells the officer your speed...by the time your radar detector actually lets you know you're being clocked, Mr. Officer is already turning around to come pull you over. Hence the reason radar detectors are a waste of money...but then again, there are plenty of cops that ride around with the the sending out a signal all day and never actually put it on hold...if a cop is using the radar properly, the radar detector in your car will not help you...but, not everyone does what they are supposed to do, so therefore, it may save you from one or two tickets.
Now, the reason it doesn't alert you when the police are right in front of you is because either the police in front of you; A)do not have a radar, B)do not have their radar on, C)they have it on "hold" and are not transmitting a signal, or D)your radar detector is broken and you need to get it fixed or replaced.

Police pointed laser at me on freeway and 7100 did not detect

the laser receiver on these are really horrible it usually only picks up the laser if its fired directly near the unit but most cops fire the laser at the front grill or rear of the back of the car and the model you are using is a low end model so the field of view for picking up the laser is really small. most rader/laser detectors that are dash mounted dont usually pick up the laser signal. and when they do its usually as soon as you pass the source of the laser

Hi my name is mat. i have a cobra xrs9690. and anytime an emergency vehicle is by me my detector doesnt go off. and if a cop goes past me the ka-band beeps up to about level 2 or 3 and then goes away. is...

Hi. Radar detectors do not sound whenever a police car or emergency vehicle is nearby. They only work if the police officer is using radar, and if he's within the range of your detector. Many states now use "LIDAR", which isn't detectable by many radar detectors.

I HAVE A CORA XRS 9685 RADAR AND IT DOESENT WARN ME WHEN I AM NEAR COPS?

find a mobile speed trailer somewhere in a neighborhood just because it doesnt alert when you are next to a patrol car doesnt mean it isnt working 9 out of 10 the radar gun isnt on in the car or the gun is set to alert at a higher speed than what you are doing
i always check mine at the mobile speed trailers that the cops set up in neighborhoods

Doesnt detect cops

Radar detection is not an absolute...there are several factors to consider:

-Most radar guns have an adjustable "gain"...which means that if an officer is only checking speeds to vehicles close by, he or she has the option of turning down the power. This means that your detector may not pick up the radar until you are right on top of it, if at all.

-Many police agencies are using laser or LIDAR technology for speed detection. Even if your detector is able to detect laser, the detector will not "see" it unless the police officer aims directly at your detector. The laser beam is very precise, and is only the size of a penny on the target vehicle when the officer is 1000+ yards away. Since the officer is usually targeting your license plate (it is the most reflective, and therefore the best target), the detector on your dashboard may miss it.

-Many radar guns, whether handheld or vehicle based, have an instant on feature. If you are in a "radar detector friendly state", the officers in your area probably use this option so they don't give away their location to those with detectors.

If in doubt, you may want to check your detector in the same vehicle with someone who has a known working one. If their detector goes off, and yours does not, yours is likely defective.

Radar detectors use what's called a superheterodyne receiver to tune in the high frequency radar signals. A side effect of this design is that they emit a small radio signal at a predictable frequency, and thus devices like the Spectre can detect them. States like Virginia (where radar detectors are illegal, f*** that state btw) equip their patrol cars with Spectres to find those of us who use them. Many commercial enforcement vehicles also have them, since it is illegal at the federal level for any vehicle requiring a commercial driver's license to have a radar detector.

The only detectors on the market now which are known to not be detectable by the latest Spectre IV units are the Bel STi Driver and the Escort Passport 9500ci. Note that this is not the standalone 9500i/9500xi unit, but the full custom installed unit with laser jamming.

If you're not one of those unfortunate enough to live in Virginia, I wouldn't bother. If you do live in VA, get the STI Driver.

How do cops not get detected by the radar?

Radar detectors usually look for a specific type of signal. Most likely, while the cop is driving around he may not have his radar on, so the detector will not be able to isolate and pinpoint the signal that is needed to activate the alarm to notify you.

I have a cobra radar dector esd 737 and i sdoesnt pick up cops tell they are like not even a half a mile ahead of you and tips or ideas how to get it to work better

Detecting of radar or lidar emissions depends on mounting of detector. In My experience it is best to mount it just above windscreen wipers. You must check if your detector is visible from license plate level. This is important for laser detection. For other measuring devices it's only important to be visible.Higher mounting facing downwards will reduce false X and K/Ka signals. It will reduce detecing of true as well, so it is all up to you.You must know that laser detecting only covers your car.It d'ont matter if a cop is 300m or 1800m away.X band has a large emission, and it is easily detected.K/Ka band is a pulse emitting and has a lot narrow detecting point. It is effective at max 800m.In ether case speed can be reduced 20-30 km/h in city, and 30-50 km/h on highway.
