I have a Woods TD 1000 (49112) timer. I plugged it in and there are 8's in the display. I've pushed every button and don't get a response from any.

Nothing changes when I push any of the buttons. I have the instruction sheet but first the buttons need to work!

SOURCE: Woods In-wall Timer Heavy Duty, Model #59018 -- I

Quick answer:
1) Programming steps say 'press clock key to return to current time and day'
2) Use mode button and change between AUTO & RND >> try manual override in each mode
3) Does timer turn lights on-and-off with program, or do they blink too?
4) Swap Black and Red wires
5) Try timer on light in different room, on different circuit breaker
6) Timer might be defective

Longer answer:
Woods 59018 manual does not show troubleshooting steps except 'check wiring; switch Red and Black leads; and/or reset programming'

Seems unlikely you could program timer unless timer is wired correctly ... unless there is a short of some kind.

To review wiring.
Green goes to bare ground wire.
White goes to Neutral white wire (neutral is usually 2 or 3 white wires twisted together and shoved to back of box)
Black must connect to Hot from circuit breaker
Red must connect to Load (light, fan, motor etc)

How to test wiring
:
Disconnect timer and set aside.
Mark each wire
Separate wires in box so they don't touch
Use ordinary tester (you can tape tester leads to wood sticks)
Turn on power
You should have two black wires that were originally connected to switch
Test black wires to bare ground > when tester lights up, that is the Hot wire.
The other black wire goes to Load

Now you want to find the neutral.
Test the Hot black wire to white wires in box.
When tester lights up, that is neutral.

If everything checks out, I guess timer is defective.

I think this switch is set to go on at dark, then you can set how many hours after it goes on you want it go off. If you want the device to go on at dark and run for 2 hours, you stop at 2.

WOODS 59018 TIMER WIREING CORRECT INSTALLED WITH POWER OFF NETURAL GROUND UP TO CODE LOAD /LINE PROPER.NEW OUT OF BOX WON'T RESET. STEP 1 LAMPS LOAD SIDE GOOD. RETIRED CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICIAN

I don't have answer for defective timer. Buy another timer if everything below checks out:
59018 7-day timer has limited 1 year warranty, and appears to be made by Tork
Timer is for 120Volt single-pole only.
Rated for 1000 watt tungsten, 8A ballast, 1/4 HP
Push reset button with toothpick > not necessary to press-and-hold other button to accomplish reset.
After reset, 12:00 am Monday should display.
Programs are deleted. Reprogram timer.

To check, change and delete specific programming, press PROG key until selected program displays, and then set new programming >>> or press-and-hold MODE button and press PROG button again to delete selected program.

Timer has non-replaceable 30-day carryover battery and does not lose programming after power outage, and will retain programs until battery is depleted.

Review wiring:
Hot to timer black.
Neutral to timer white.
Load to timer red.
Ground to timer green.

Lights will blink if timer red and timer white are connected to load together.
Timer will not function if timer black and red wires are reversed. Display will not show.

Sunset sunrise doesn't seem to work anymore

Timer is not identified.
If digital timer does not function as before, try resetting timer and then re-program.
If timer has battery, then change battery and reset timer.
If reset does not restore functionality, then timer has gone bad. Most in-wall timers have 1 year limited warranty.

Below are common 7-day timers, but there are many different brands:

You posted under Woods 7-day timer: except Woods timer does not astronomic dawn dusk function. Woods 7-day is same as Tork 7-day and GE 7-day, and they do not have astronomic function.

http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#59028
Reset button is small round button.
Push in reset with toothpick or paper clip.
Then reprogram timer.

If you have Intermatic ST01C or EJ500 battery operated timer: Replace battery, then to reset timer: push-and-hold ON_OFF button, and then push reset button. Keep holding on-off button until display changes. Release on-off button and display will flash 12:00. Then reprogram timer.

My 24 digital timer its not working! isnt there anyway to reset? it doesnt show anything on the screen!! why?

If plug-in timer does not display, then
1) Reset button has tripped > push reset with paper clip
2) power is off > plug something else in receptacle to check receptacle
3) timer is loose in receptacle > unplug timer, spread prongs a bit, and plug back in
4) timer has gone bad.

Except for a few Woods and Intermatic outdoor timers, plug-in timers have internal rechargeable battery. Battery is not replaceable so when battery goes bad, the timer is bad.

See other Woods plug-in timers:

I'm having trouble setting this item. I can get it to come on, but it won't turn off at the set time. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Janene

I don't have a Woods 59112 Manual
Here's link to Woods 49063 manual aka Woods TD1000 aka Noma TD1000
If manual is same/similar as your manual, then read solution given below
If solution below is incorrect, the write out your instructions ... I found that writing out instructions makes things clear.

Solution:
I think you have set ON time but did not set corresponding OFF time
Below is whole programming layout for you to read through
The important thing is to look at the display while programming
For example, lets say you are setting ON time for PROG1
For ON time, the display shows 3 things:
-display shows PROG in upper left corner
-display shows the number 1 to right of time
-display shows the word ON to the right of the number 1

Now you want to set OFF time for PROG1

For OFF, the display shows 3 things:
-display shows PROG as before
-display shows 1 as before
-display has changed and shows the word OFF to right of number 1

Here's how to set Woods TD1000 timer

Plug in timer to see if battery will recharge. Display shows when battery is charged. No display, then timer is no good.

TD-1000 timer has 8 on-off functions per 24-hour day

Timer has 5 buttons + reset:
TIME MODE PROG HOUR MIN

Set current time
Press and hold TIME > use Hour to set hour, Min to set minute
Release Time button ... correct time should show

Program: Capacity for 8 on-off times per day
Press PROG to set first ON time
ON and number 1 are displayed on left
Use hour and minute button to set ON time

Press PROG to confirm
Now, OFF and number 1 are displayed
Use hour and min key to set OFF time

Press PROG to confirm

When 8 programs are set, Press MODE key.
Choose Manual OFF. Manual ON, Auto ON, Auto Off

To use programs, select Auto ON

DST daylight savings time has to be done manually.
Press HOUR MIN button simultaneously > timer set up one hour
Repeat again and timer goes back one hour

Do not plug timer into extension cord > must be plugged into wall
