If the smoke was coming from inside the dishwasher... A common problem is a plastic item , utensil etc has fallen down onto the heating element. During the drying cycle this could possibly melt the plastic and generate some smoke.

You may have already, but try opening and closing the door and restarting the machine again. If the door switch is loose, you may be able to get it to make the connection and run.
