hav not checked for codes yet. Car belongs to daugter and husband is out of town. He is thinking timing chain

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2012

make it could have jump timing. you say it back fires . that would be out of timing and or not spark to the coil

thanks..if it did jump time what other, if any damage could have been done to the motor? miles are high

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2012

really not damage. but thinking it out I do not think it jumped timing I think ignition coil or spark sound to be getting no spark. how many miles and when was the lasttune up

  • denar38
    denar38 Nov 29, 2012

155K, maybe two years on tune up...pcv had to be replaced last year

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2012

that is low miles trust me. wow that long on the tune up. I bet the spark plugs are junk in that motor. the spark plugs are good for a year if that.

  • denar38
    denar38 Nov 29, 2012

But even if the plugs were bad, the car was running decent and just died.

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2012

somethings but when spark plugs are bad it stresses the coil for they fight to spark. you do say it back fires

  • denar38
    denar38 Nov 29, 2012

yes it backfires with and without starting fluid.

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2012

that is saying there is not spark . you could have a bad crank position sensor . that keeps the timing in place.

  • Anonymous Nov 29, 2012

check for codes I bet you have a bad crank position sensor .that sensoe runs the timing

  • denar38
    denar38 Nov 29, 2012

thanks. we are gonna try to pull codes Friday and proceed from there.

SOURCE: First: alarm went off on its own.(mazda 6 2003).

there is often a small back up battery in the immobiliser unit itself, if you can locate this unit and replace the battery with the ignition on / engine running, then it should not need recoding and work fine after that. The other thing that could be wrong is the key battery (if the fob has one) or the transponder chip in the key head. If the key signal is low the immobiliser lamp will light during driving, but this does not explain the alarm going off. That is more likely either a poor vehicle battery, alarm / immobiliser back up battery, or another electrical fault such as water leakage into a tail-light or even the alarm unit itself when it rains. A lot of alarms are voltage sensing and when the vehicle is parked they will alarm if the battery voltage changes for any reason, though not during driving so the battery in the immob is my first choice to look at.

Car stalls, will usually restart after sitting a while

Seeing as how you had a check light on,
what codes were present & did you diagnose
& repair them ?

Sounds like a bad fuel pump on the stalling or
no start

I have a Mazda Tribute 2005.About a month ago it started bucking when going up an incline. Then recently the check engine light came on and i took it for a diagnostic check. They told me a valve was sticking...

if it were any of the before mentioned it would be constant. One thing I know that starts out when only on an incline is a dirty fuel filter. Not saying it's the problem but it's the cheapest thing I would try before forking out the dough for a new motor

After changing the fan belt at a garage, my Mazda 6 would not start. We trried using the extra key remote, but the car still will not start. What is the problem/solution? Is there a special Security...

Hi there,

Your Mazda 6 keys have transponders built in and only the correct key I.D. will activate your vehicle's immobilizer.

I'm at a loss as to how changing a fan belt could have altered your vehicle's immobilizer system - are you absolutely certain the garage hasn't disturbed any of the electronics?

First, we need to establish whether your vehicle's immobilizer still considers your keys as valid.

- Insert Key # 1 and turn ignition to ON (do not start).
Observe the "Security" light in the cluster - it should illuminate, then turn off after approx. 3 seconds. If this works, then Key # 1 is considered still vaild.
- quickly turn Key 1 back to LOCK position and remove key.

Wait 5 seconds...

- Insert Key # 2 and turn ignition to ON (do not start).
Observe the "Security" light in the cluster - it should illuminate, then turn off after approx. 3 seconds. If this works, then Key # 2 is considered still vaild.

Note: if Security light does not behave as above and keys still won't start your car, then your keys are no longer validated by the PCM

If this is the case, then unfortunately unlike other manufacturers, only Mazda will be able to re-program your key's ID into your vehicle's PCM. Contact your local Mazda Dealership to discuss.

Scott

Rough starting, won't idle, backfiring.

The backfire is a result of excess fuel not firing in the engine. This could be a fouled plug or a bad coil pack. Basically the engine computer should be trying to compensate for this problem, so there should be a check engine light on. If no check engine light, then you would need to do a more in depth search. But I would start with a tune up.

First is there a charge for this service advise?

It sounds like an ignition problem. I would probably replace the plugs and plug wires first (I suppose they need replacment anyway). If that does not help, check your coil packs (the black boxes that the plug wires go into on the back of the engine - I think the 1990 had direct ignition system [DIS]), if not, replace the distributor cap and rotor button. Also, check the ignition timing.
