I replaced the Y and Z boards. Screen lights, but have new prob.
My friend experienced the "POP - and screen went blank" problem a couple of months ago. He got an estimate on the repairs but decided to get a new TV instead. I have worked on electronics in the past and know a couple of people who have worked on similar TV's so figured I'd take a shot and try to fix it.
Yesterday we replaced the YSUS and ZSUS boards with (supposedly) new, working boards purchased from a local Zenith parts distributor. I turned the unit on and had a full screen of black and white static, then a few seconds later the left 2/3 of the screen displayed a pink/orange static. The right side of the screen was mostly dark, with a little dim static.
I unpluged the tv, waited 30 seconds or so and tried again, same result. I hooked up a known working antenna, same result. So I started fiddling with the remote. I think I was able to navigate the memnu with the remote arrow keys, because each time I hit up or down the colored static would chage a little bit (color or width). Blindly changing channels also changed the colored static but it mostly stayed on the left 2/3 of the screen. Also we did have audio, so I belive the tuner works.
I also changed the inputs with the remote (just to see what would happen, the only input attached to anything was the TV antenna) on some of the inputs we saw a 3"-4" vertical orange bar that every few seconds would change position, it kind of looked that a creen moving a display around to prevent burn out. Note that this orange would appear on the right 1/3 of the screen that had only dim static when I was navigating the menu or changing channels.
When we were instaling the new boards, we found one connector that had a pin bent down (possibly happened when being put back together at the shop when the unit was taken in for the repair estimate?) so we looked anround but did not find any other bad connections.
Anyway, sorry to ramble on but I am unsure of where to go from here. If anyone has any ideas that would be great. Otherwise I'll probably scrap the unit and try to Ebay the parts.
Re: I replaced the Y and Z boards. Screen lights, but...
Hello,
I have been through the LG TV runaround, and I can tell you that it isn't easy. On the same unit that you are currently working on, the part numbers of the parts you received may or may not be correct. LG (Zenith) uses slightly different parts for the same model, and it really is kind of a gamble on which ones are right. They do not keep track of parts by serial number, and on different TV's of the same model, I have been through 8 control boards (on one set!), 4 sets of X and Y sus boards (on one set), digital boards, and so on and so on. The people are nice in LG's tech services, and they will admit to the fact that it may take several of the same parts to get it right.
My shop has decided not to work on LG or Zenith for this and other reasons. The turnaround time to get a TV back out of the door is ridiculously long because of the wait time with parts going back and forth.
In short, you have the right boards, but they may be the wrong boards. Maddening, isn't it?

If the sound [Audio] output is OK; Back - light problem. Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. It will be best to replace the inverter board as card basis. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
I had the same problem with my Viera. if you disconnect the power and ribbon cable from the YSUS board (check youtube for how), the light led will blink 6 times, indicating the YSUS is bad. Check ebay for TNPA5175 board (about $115-160). The pop is one of the DG402RP chips burnout. These are about $4, but only available from China. If you can wait a month for delivery, you can solder the new one to replace the bad one. You may want to purchase several in case more are bad or it happens again.
The tv power supply board it is shorted and dead. That the board where the tv power a/c cord plug into it.Tries websites like Shojimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole new refurbish tv power supply board for the replacement.
shaylane_195, Good description of problem! But you left out one or two key things to tell me. Age of monitor? Approximate total "ON" hours of use? Is unit covered by LG (Lucky Goldstar) warranty? You and only you can tell me if the screen is really BLANK, or is it only BLACK? Do flashlight test to determine true state of screen! Can you see very, very faint image of WIN-desktop holding bright flashlight near your black screen? This monitor works!!! You just need to fix the possible (1) "cold, frosty looking, thermally intermittant solder connection on the "internal switch-mode-power-supply/CCFL inverter board. Yes, your monitor along with many other CCFL back-lit LCD units of all brands also could have some BAD, swollen, leaky electrolytic filter capacitors installed on the SMPS/CCFL inverter board which will need to be replaced with new ones of higher quality. Get back to me, lmistyrel on aim. or do additional comment on fixya, after you do some reading in my and other fixya tech's profiles to discover all options you as consumer/user have open to you. Bye for now. 12fixlouie
Sounds like a cap or fuse has blown in the set, you will need to take the back cover of and have a look, check on the power board for any blown caps, you will notice them straight away if one has poped, also check any fuses that may have blown they will also need to be replaced.
Tries change power board, most cases, but some case the main backlight video board it dead,or both power and main backlight video board .My sugestions to u buy both power and main backlight video boards, tries the brand new power board first,if don't work, try it with the backlight video board with the old power board, same prob. tries both new boards.Trouble shoot this way u have base cover have boards in hand, must lose some money for return merchandise, for restocking fee.
On the power supply circuit board some capacitors will vent (top will pop open), dome, or bulge. They can be replaced but the board is two sided and easy to damage. Having the caps replaced at a repair shop is the best way to go. If diyers try it the board can be damaged and then it would have to be replaced. Repair may cost a couple hundred dollars, but a new board can cost that alone, not including installation.
Unfortunately, that board is the inverter board. And for this model the inverter board is only supplied with the the PDP panel. The panel is quite expensive, here's a link if needed:
common problems with these, usually customers here a loud pop. then the screen goes blank. I would try...
Some of these have a 4 pin test on the control board that you can jump with solder to get test pattern. If you get it to do that then these boards maybe good and would replace the control board. if nothing happens, then
the upper & lower drive also the Ysus and Zsus boards all at the same time.
last could be a defective panel.
hope this helps. p/n are on all the boards.
