Problem with Canon ZR400 to work with video import

How do you make Canon ZR400 DV camera to work with Windows Vista?! Is there an updated driver software for this? or did it ever come with an installation software to begin with!

  • merrybell817 Jan 13, 2009

The Canon Web site I was directed to did not have installation software for the camera itself. They only had the installation software to download images from a memory card to the computer. What I'm trying to do is import digitally recorded videotape to the hard drive or disc. Thanks for trying & for your quick response.

Horizontal grey bars on the screen and video output, even on video shot and previously without those bars. This is on the Canon ZR400 Digital Video Camcorder.

This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I’m a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I’m semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

Grey line on the screen when playing de video

The head unit that reads the tape is dirty or clogged, or the tape has moisture on it. Try fast forwarding to the end of the tape then rewinding back to the beginning, sometimes this clears the moisture. If that doesn't work try buying a head cleaner from an electronics store and follow the instructions to clean the head. if that doesn't work you need to take it somewhere where they fix cameras or send it in to canon to get fixed. If nothing else works it's most likely a bad head. I have the exact same cam (zr400) and the same thing happened to me but rather than send it in to canon, (who refused to honor their warranty saying it had major sand damage when it never even went outside) i opened it myself and replaced the head with the one from my older zr65 camcorder. It worked flawlessly. Hope this helps -J

Connect JVC GR-D240ek to vista laptop

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A firewire to USB will not work. It has to be firewire to firewire. A JVC GR-D240ek uses 4-pin, IEEE 1394 compliant Digital Video Connector [DV OUT] to connect a 1394 cable (also known as a FireWire or i.Link cable) to a laptop equipped with an equivalent IEEE 1394 port. Please note that some laptops firewire port could either be 4 pins or 6 pins.

Soon as that connection as shown above is established, you can use Windows Import Video to capture / download the videos.

Other notes (from the same Windows Help link above) :
  • You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Movie Maker. After you connect ... your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Movie Maker, turn on your DV camera, put it into playback mode, and Windows Import Video should open automatically.
  • You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Photo Gallery. After you connect ...your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Photo Gallery, turn on your DV camera, and put it into playback mode. In Windows Photo Gallery, click File, click Import from Camera or Scanner, click your DV camera in the list of devices, click Import, and then follow the instructions.
  • You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Live Photo Gallery. (This options requires you to install Windows Live on your computer.) After you connect your...your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Live Photo Gallery, turn on your DV camera, and put it into playback mode. In Windows Live Photo Gallery, click File, click Import from a camera or scanner, click your DV camera in the list of devices, click Import, and then follow the instructions.
Verify that the laptop's firewire port is 100% up to specs and totally compliant to IEEE 1394.

God luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Trouble importing video from Sony Digital Handycam onto PC

try this link.

They cross-referenced it and found that the DCR-TRV19 camera used the same driver as the DCR-TRV280. I took the download off Sonys website and it worked perfectly.

Cannot download video to windows vista

A USB cable will not transfer video from this camera. you have to have the video cable, which plugs in at the bottom of the front of the camera, next to the S-video. Hope this helps.

Transfering video to Mac

Digital video on the ZR400 is transferred to a computer only via the DV out port, which will connect to a firewire port on a PC or a Mac. USB will not transfer video, only images to and from the card.
