I have a Coleman 5000 generater that runs fine, but has no AC output. no-AC output problem
Pull off the cover at the end of the generator and locate a 2 lead capacitor, it should read 130UF 200V and replace it, they often go bad and you will not have any output if they are. colman has them for 20.00 shipped. 1-800-445-1805
Have you conected the brushes on the right way? the leads are + and -.
you can run it up and use a 12v battery and connect it to the brushes correct polarity, with the othe LEADS removed and taped can shock you and chect the out put it it around 100 120v chech the AVR or brush polarity.
If yours dont have brushes it will have a capasitor that is prob out of spec.

Try replacing the capacitor. You can buy it from http://www.jackssmallengines.com/do_it_home.html. When you pull off the power end of the generator look at the diodes also. If they look toasted replace them as well

I thought if I replaced one of the two motor brushes that it would fix the problem. I bought some motor brushes at Ace Hardware and soldered the one in place using the same spring on the brush that was too short. Now, instead of about 50 vac I have nothing. I tried to remove the brush that I had replaced and it is stuck. I believe I will have to disassemble the housing to get it out. The other brush that was long enough to make contact was removed just fine.
I would guess that the brushes wearing inconsistantly is a rough spot on the armature but the brushes appear to ride in the same radius.
Some of these older generators have to be flashed to get them working. Not knowing how yours is built I can not tell you if this is your problem or if you would know how to do it.
You would first need a wiring diagram.
Basicaly here is how it to flash the field.
The generator builds up a small voltage and then sends this voltage to the windings to build up the 110 volts. Sometimes the magnitic field gets weak on a old unit and you have to insert a voltage perhaps 12 volts on the proper winding. The generator will slowly build up and start working.
You can not do this unless you have a digram and know what you are doing. Might try to get someone to flash it and see if that fixes it.
