Roper washing machine makes grinding noise on spin cycle but the tub doesn't turn

My roper washing machine makes a loud grinding/buzzing sound on spin cycle but the tub doesn't turn. It does turn freely when you turn it by hand but not when the machine is on spin cycle. Any ideas?

It sounds like you have a motor coupling that is broken. There are videos on YouTube to show you how to repair this. Search for "motor coupling repair on direct drive".

SOURCE: Roper RAX4232KQ0 maker loud noise at spin cycle and then stops

There are a few things that can go wrong, If the washer doesn't adgitate or spin then probably the coupler is broken, lean the washer back and look under the machine between the motor and transmission you will find the coupler. (very common)

Coupler Part# 285753A $22.95

If its agitating but not spinning, check the lid switch, (easy check just listen for the click when you shut the lid, Or you can bypass it with a jumper wire under the console there are only 2 screw that hold the console down they are philips and either located in the front lower corners or the back lower corners)

Lid switch Part# 3949247 $42.95

If lid switch is good and the motor still doesnt run you might have a bad timer (RARE)
Timer Part# 3954563 $95.95

If you can hear the motor running but its not spinning and you have rulled out the coupler then your probably looking at a clutch (common problem) either the clutch isnt grabbing or the brake isnt releasing both problems solved with the clutch kit

Clutch kit Part# 285785 $44.95

Worst case your looking at a transmission, (uncommon) to rule out, make sure its agitating, then put washer in spin cycle. look under the washer to see if the clutch bell is spinning. if its not then you will need a transmission.

Trans Part# 3360629 $172.95

if its making loud noises when it stops spinnig then the block is bad.

Block Part# 389140 $14.95

SOURCE: I have a top load Roper washer that won't spin.Any ideas?

That sounds like a bad drum bearing, check and eventually replace the drum bearing.

Our roper is very loud in spin cycle and now has a grinding sound to boot at most times...bearing?

unlikely
more probable that there is an obstruction between the tub and the drum ( coin, bra wire etc) causing the problem

Not spinning and makes loud noise

Motor coupling failure is the most likely suspect. Easy and cheap to fix. It is a simple rubber "shock absorber" that links the motor to the transmission. Search for washer online and most likely you'll find the part and the easy repair instructions.

Roper washer RAX4232PQO doesn't agitate or spin

It sounds like you may have a broken motor coupling. This is a common problem that usually occurs through normal wear and tear. Replacement couplers are more resilient and resist breaking much better. If the washer will fill, will not agitate or spin, but will still drain, these are the symptoms of a broken motor coupling. The accompanying noise of the motor engaging and a rattling/grinding sound is also a common symptom. This is a very simple and inexpensive repair. The following link explains step-by-step how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

The part number is included in the link I provided. You can purchase a replacement on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: Roper is manufactured by Whirlpool and uses Whirlpool parts, so these instructions will apply.

Grinding Noise during spin and wash cycles

i have no idea what make/model this is regarding but if it is a whirlpool, roper, or inglis then it is most likely a motor coupling that is broken it goes between the motor and the transmission let me know how you make out

Grinding Sound

Sounds like the brakes have become noisy, just like in an automobile if they glaze over they start to squeak. This really wont hurt the machine but if you dissasemble the machine (or pay a professional at the most 1.5 hr labor since your washer is the best design and fairly simple to repair) and clean the brakes (basket drive assy) and the drum (part of the tub support)
