Format hard disk C of netbook

Important: It is recommended to take a backup of all the necessary data you have on your C: drive before you format it. Formatting the drive will erase everything on it.

The steps to format hard drive can vary depending upon which version of Windows you are using. You can refer to the following links for instructions:
For Windows 8 / 8.1:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/fl/format-hard-drive-windows-8.htm
For Windows 7 / Vista:

How do you set up an external hard drive?

Turn your computer on and plug the external hard drive into the computer.

Open "Computer Management" by clicking "Start," "Control Panel," "System and Security," "Administrative Tools" and "Computer Management."

Click "Disk Management" in the left pane under "Storage."

Locate your external drive from the list of hard drives connected or installed on your computer.

Right-click the drive and select "Format."

Select a file format from the drop-down menu. Choose "NTFS" if you will be using the external hard drive with a computer that uses Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP.

If you will be using the hard drive with an older version of Windows, select "FAT32."

This is a much less common format.

Click "OK" twice and your external drive is formatted. Once the drive is formatted, it is properly set up to be used with your computer.

hope this helps

Won't back up to hitachi external hard drive

hmmm what backup software are you using, from windows or hitachi? seems if the computer can see the drive, then it's a file formatting issue that you are facing.

Can i format my HD on an external bases with my laptop, then install it back into my pc. my hard drive crashed and i need to get it to boot. i dont have the boot disk

Technically, YES, the hard drive can be formatted as an external (with the appropriate equipment) on your laptop (if there are still files on it, you may even be able to extract them from it) but it still won't be bootable because it does not have an operating system on it.

That would be the part where you need the recovery disc. Windows setup programs from these boot discs already have the format utility so if there aren't any files to extract from the drive, you can skip to reinstalling Windows on the desktop and formatting it in the process.

Bottom line is that you need a Windows installation disc to make the hard drive bootable again, regardless of where you format it.

I initialized my harddrive to a mac and now it won`t be detected by my PC

You cannot "see" a hard drive that has been initialized for MacIntosh from within Windows. The two OSs are not interchangeable at the hardware level of the drive. You will need to format the drive for Windows in order to see it in Windows or buy some software to install on Windows that WILL let you see the Mac drive.
